Thanks for helping me out with this problem.

I have a G70 and it stops working 30 min into a dvd, almost exact in time when the unit seems to "overheat"?
The screen just fades out to black, the projector still runs but the tubes are completely off. I cannot bring up menus or anything driven on to the tubes.

No error code on the back

Does anyone have ideas or had this issue themselves?

Thanks
Pat

Open the cover and make sure you can see the tubes necks where the neck boards attach. Start the projector and when you look in that area you will see a faint glow inside the necks. When the picture goes out look and see if there is still a glow.

Check what Mac said. That's a bit of an oddball, but my guess is that one of the power supplies is bad. It could also be the PA board under the green and red lenses. That supplies the HV to the set. WHen the pix fades out, does it go out of focus and get larger as well? If so, then you're slowly losing the HV instead of the filaments.

I can repair your boards, whatever it is.

Cheers!

I will check the filaments on the tubes tonight when the picture goes out and see if they are still lit.
its quick yet it seems to fade out almost like a screen saver came on, I don’t see it going out of focus first but like I said its rather quick but the action is more fading like than anything.

I do have an electronics background and have had quite a few projectors in the past so you can be techie with your comments and I should have a good idea of what you are talking about... thanks keep the ideas coming while I will continue posting my observations of the problem.

It does sound like a power supply issue then, not an HV one. Never had that exact problem if the filaments do die completely, but I'd guess the power supply or somewhere in the power path from the power supply to the filaments.

I'd be surprised if it was the filaments also. Just figured it would be a good place to start.

UPDATE:

So I ran the projector again and after 20min the tubes went off… I checked the filaments and all three are running. When the screen went out it was like a zooming action a quick zoom in to all black.

I tried the PJ again and it would turn on but still no output, after an hour of waiting the PJ would then produce normal operation. I tried to keep the covers open to see if additional cooling would help but this time the image went out in less than 5 min. This is typical after waiting for a LONG time then the PJ will work like normal for half of a DVD 30 min.

I takes me a long time to watch a full DVD now…Wink

It's the PA board, the HV is shutting down. That board is calibrated specifically to your set, you can't get another one and just drop it in, you could nuke the tubes (worst case).

I can however repair your board if you want to send it in. SHoot me an email to curtpalme@shaw.ca

OK Curt I understand that some of the boards in this set are calibrated to each other I will send the board out and get it fixed.

I just put this one up a few months ago and just love the picture, I have had quite a few projectors in my life 4101, 801, 808, 8500, and now this Sony G70. The G70 rocks the focus is finally where I desire it to be and the colors are fantastic. Who knows someday I may even get my hands on a 9” but until then think I should just use the heck out of this one and enjoy it.

I sent you an email about sending in the board.

Thanks Pat
