Product or Service Involved: Epic Sound 990 projector

******* pulled up to me in the kmart parking lot in a sh*tty white astro van. Then showed me a fake catalogue I payed $600 cash for what they told me was a 1080p projector listed for $3699. I will beat them if I ever see them again.

I always love that people get pissed at the seller for a POS.. yet they had no problems forking over $60....0 in the parking lot. Who really is the idiot?

I'm with you. You kind of deserve what you get in these situations. Caveat emptor baby.

Then invite him to see what a real PJ can do. Well actually that's pretty mean...he doesn't even have a room big enough for real set up, big house, just a bunch of small rooms.

It is up to you, but I would do something like this if it were me, but talk in quite general terms. I'm not sure what your G70 looks like (how well set up), but if well set up, you could show it to him as an "example" and explain to him that he not need to get into something like a 170 pound PJ to have a much better picture. Something like a 720p DLP compared to yours will have more of a washed out look in low APL scenes, but OTOH, it will be sharper and have more "pop" and CR in high APL scenes. A current 1080p LCD will look more like your CRT to a "lay person" just with washed out low APL scenes and an overall brighter picture. Someone like him is not going to know about/likely care about motion artifacts and that sort of thing so I would not even go there. Just help him get a decent picture for $600-1500.

If it were not for the issues and the cost/performance I'd tell him to pick up the NOS Samsung SPH710AE on eBay for $700. I've had two of those in my theater for a short time. Joe Kane did a really good job on them, it is just not quite bright enough and the blacks are a little too elevated for me. But man it has wonderful colors and probably the most natural looking picture of any 720 PJ I've ever seen. It even has a mode for black and white movies (which should be shown at 5500 not 6500).

INteresting spec sheet, they dare put up 1080 resolution. Mind you, there's no 'p' at the end. Smile

I'll bet it's a 480p set. Did you see pixellation when you looked at the image?

My guess is it accepts 1080 input but is a cheap 480p LCD panel.

Yup. That's why it says 1920 x 1080 "MAX". It's common even on "real" digital projectors or TVs to see the "MAX" of what they'll accept. Though the good manufacturers will also give the native resolution too. Problem is that most people don't know what any of this means.

Agree 100% that if people give in to high pressure sales tactics they get what they deserve. It's the same thing with anyone selling anything door to door. I tell them "leave me your information and I'll get back to you if I'm interested after I review". That always works. If they're actually selling something good and legit, they should have no problems leaving a name/phone. If they don't want to, what makes them think I'd actually want to buy anything from them? I actually do it more just to get rid of scammers quickly so that I don't waste anyone's time. That said, I don't think I've ever bought anything from anyone who came to my door ...

Ha! Good point. Kids excluded of course!

We're always buying that sort of stuff. That's completely different. I mean the adult sellers looking to make a quick buck... Smile
