Hey Guys !

After sorting out the major issues i had with the Marquee 8500LC i bought a few days ago, i thought i open a new thread with the remaining issue.

I managed to get everything working so far (even the U7 chip). After reseating it , the Marquee had no more troubles sofar in that department.

Spent almost the whole day on getting the basic picture "functional" , cause the previous owner screwed everything up very badly.

My question...

On the Green Tube in the right corner un-sharpness is visible. (I went through the whole Setup, and it's only visible in the right corner and only on the green tube).

Could it be mold or blooming ??

Sorry for the really bad photo quality but i only got my crappy smartphone camera at the moment.

Thanx
Ronald

It be best to remove the lenses and look into the the tubes with a flash light.

But to me it looks like either fungus or at worse the C-element might be damaged in that spot.

The C-elements are made of acrylic and if any sunlight gets shined into the lens it will fry the element like a magnifying glass does to ants.

@Nashou66

I actually removed the lenses earlier.. the C-Element looked good couldn't make anything out.

Guess it's fungus than.. that sucks.. must remove the tube than and clean it (read the tutorial 5times already)

Thanx again

You can try to clean it but the age of the glycol and trying to clean out the chamber with out destroying the bellow
is not easy. It can be done , however if any small amount of fungus or if the anodizing has left exposed areas of bare aluminum then the fungus will return rather quickly.

the easiest way to inspect the chamber is to cut the old bellow out and replace with new.
This way you can check the faceplate for corrosion and then paint it with epoxy if need be.
Also its much easier to tear out and replace than to try to drain the old glycol through the tiny
fill holes and then fill with cleaner, which you'd have to shake to clean the fungus which in turn
might cause contaminants to get on the guns and cause other problems of the tube internally.

Yes - a new set of bellows and new glycol is a wise investment to prevent future
problems with probable leaks and corrosion (fungi doen't really live in glycol -
just looks like it) Now that you have sorted out your running problems, a little
basic maintenance will help assure good performance for years down the road.
You can also source stainless fill screws and try to find a red c-element....

Right now I am the only place you can find new bellows made with a better material.

I am actually down to my last 13 or so bellows. I wasn't going to place a manufacturing order anytime soon but there have been a few new LC marquee's that have been bought by newbees to the marquee and I think they might need them in the near future.

No problem, will box them up now.

11 bellows left now, Just realized if I ever get around to converting my 2 8" to 9" i'll need them so looks like i'll be putting an order into Apple rubber anyhow.

even in the case of non leaking bellows it is good practice to change the bellows as glycol is a hygroscopic fluid.

for 3*9 inch tubes about 2 liters so let us say 2 1/2 to be on the safe side.
mix is 75-25

so ethylene glycol (or propylene glycol)=1.875liter
glycerol=0.625

When I did this to a M9000 then I bought 1,5l ethylene-glycol and 0,5l glycerine, and I have some spare left.

@everyone

I thought about something and need youre opinions about it..

If i do the whole work of removing the tubes , replacing the Bellows / Glykol wouldn´t it be wiser
to search for 9" Tubes and convert the 8500LC to 9500LC ??

Is it worth it , how much difference can i expect in picture quality from 8" to 9" tubes.

Thanx again

It depends on what content do you watch on it, if you would only use in 720P or ocassionally in 1080P then I would say you can stay with the 8" tubes, because there is no difference in quality at 720P, the 9" tubes are expensive specially here in europe too(But of course they last longer), and you would also need some parts for the 9" LC housings.
But if you would upgrade to 9" then I know someone who might have been interested in your 180DMB blue tube Smile

Jaky is correct with needing new housings. For now I would just replace the Bellows and set up the PJ as is to learn the machine and to see if any problems arise. It would suck if you bought 9 inch full tube set's for lots of $$$ and then have the PJ not work.

Replace the bellows now, learn the intricacies of the Marquee including the dismantling and re building. During this process you will
be able to see how everything works and appreciate the Marquee.

Then after you have been using the 8500LC for a while and any problems that might arise are dealt with you can begin to look for
9 inch full built tube sets. it be chapter that way then to find bare tubes and old burnt tubes for the housings.

The 8 inch LC has a very nice image....even with 1080p.

@nashou66

If you think the 8500LC is sufficent for me now, i well replace the bellows and glycol and work from there on.. like you suggested !

@gjaky
About resolution thought 1080i would be a good compromise... i would feed it from my Phenom X6 Based HTPC anyway so i can play with the timings
