Hello. I am wanting to make the upgrade back to the wonderful world of CRT and was wonder about what sorta projector would fit my needs. I would say I am an avid gamer and light movie watcher. My room is a dedicated home theater with controlled light and light walls and floors (don't know if its necessarily to mention like in the digital forums). I would like to stick with 1080p and above for around $1500. I see Curt has an ampro 3300 for sale and a Sony 1292 which sounds awesome except I hear the Sony is a little loud. Thanks for the help.

Well first you have to tell what aspect ratio do you want to use 1500p, because if it is in 16:9 (like) then you will need a hard-core 9" machine, like Sony G90, EH Marquee 9500 (ultra), Barco 1209 or 909, they are not cheap... Or a blend which is also not cheap. But if you would use it as 4:3 then maybe you can get adequate results even with the ampro -for gaming at least
_________________ projectors in the past : NEC 6-9PG xtra, Electrohome Marquee 6-7500, NEC XG 1351 LC ( with super modified Electrohome VNB neckboard !!!)
current: VDC Marquee 9500LC
The MOD: VNB-DB, VIM-DB

My bad yo. Fixed my post. 1500p would be sick.

Actually if you've seen any of the NEC, Dell, Gateway, LG, or Samsung 30" LCD displays that can do 1600p (2560x1600, 16;10 aspect ratio) You wouldn't be so blown away... honestly its not a much higher resolution. And plus nothing video wise runs above 1080p for the consumer world currently anyway.
for 1080p I would say a 9" CRT projector should do you justice, I dont think you need a G90 or 9501LC or 1209... Hell I can get away with 1080p on my XG1100, granted that 1080p is not an optimal resolution for the tubes themselves, but nevertheless it does work.
Check out some mid range 9" CRTs, I think those are your best bet

It might be challenging to pick up a newer (late 1990's) 9 inch CRt for $1500. , much less $1500. shipped.
If you can get a 1292 for that much consider it will have to have a hush-box built around it, there's like 13 fans inside. Also, there's an inherent issue with video streaking on these sets and would need a modification done to fix it. Talked about here

For your budget a nice 8 inch might be the best choice. I like the XGLC or Marquee 8500 because Moome cards are available for both.
