In January I replaced the quad and EHT module on my data 808 after a loud pop, everything has been great until last night when I hear a loud pop and the picture freaks out. It's been acting up for a couple of weeks (random screen shrinking / out of focus raster which then comes back to life on it's own).
I've changed out the quad and EHT again and have HV crackle and all the LED's are green but no picture, have tried port 3 and 5 without success.
Any ideas on the next step in diagnosis ?
All help gratefully received.
Hold the press, the red EHT light is on ! As I've just replaced the EHT and quad then that just leaves the splitter - will
report back to confirm. Fingers crossed . . .
Didn't work I'm at a loss now

Short of the quads, I've had no issues with 808s and 1208s being any less reliable than they were 10 years ago. Ditto for the Marquees, save for the pre-1995 ones.

Draganm - I'm in the UK and CRT projectors are a bit thin on the ground to say the least, I watch with envy
your ebay chock full of tasty projectors !
Tom.W - Yep, matched set from an old BD500
Curt - I'm ashamed to admit I put the old EHT module back in by mistake - OOPS !
I have a picture now except that on either port 3 or 5 the screen "flashes" after around 2 minutes
and then I hear what can only be described as a loud buzz / fizzing sound which gets louder at which
point I chicken out and turn the set off.
Could the EHT have taken anything else out with it you reckon ?
Thanks for the replies guys !

She's alive again !
Not quite perfect (a screen "judder" every 30 minutes or so) but ok to watch.
Reseating all the boards and swapping back the "bad" EHT seemed to have helped ?
Why do these damn things seem to defy logic sometimes.
Anyone care to PM me with a quote to refurb all of the boards ? (I love my baby)
And yes I love brackets, exclamation, question and quotation marks.
Thanks guys and girls.

There is no such thing as 'refurbing' the boards. BArcos generally are solid as a rock, save for the odd board failure and the odd HV failure. Capacitors and such in the BArcos are pretty solid.

I didn't mean to get your back up with the term "refurb"
My Barco works VERY hard for a living, 6 hours a day minimum.
By "refurb" I meant checking all the boards out for faults, out of tolerance caps, resistors, poor solder and such like, replacing anything that was needed, in the U.K we would call this a refurb.
Cheers.

You didn't get my back up, sorry if it came across that way. What I'm saying is that in my experience, even high hour Barcos (like Marquees) don't experience a lot of component drift. Sudden failures on occasion- yes, but you can't predict those.
I haven't really seen higher failures now as compared to 5-10 years ago with the 808 sets. Ditto really for Marquees.
Seems once manufacturers got past 1995, the quality of production really went up. Gone are Barco's bad solder joints from pre 1994, as in the Barco 500s and 800s.
MArquee did the same, the post 1995 sets are super reliable.
So what I'd recommend is if you want backup parts, then buy some spare boards if you want, but IMHO you'd be wasting money doing what you say to the boards, changing caps that don't have a history of failing, or solder joints that don't typically fail.

Sounds like a plan, could you pm me prices for a set of boards and maybe a new ( old stock ) green tube.
Thanks again all for your help.
