HDM ringing is a rather annoying artifact that I'm looking to rid myself of. It shows up when running 1080p@60Hz on short retrace in my 9500LC. After talking with Steve Flynn over at Hi-Rez a few months back he advised that this issue effects about 7 of 10 HDM's. Apparently there have been multiple versions of the HDM produced over the years with most suffering from this issue. When Hi-Rez used to offer their Crystal view 9500LC clone they would test and hand pick HDM's, therefore it's not as simple as picking units produced after/before a certain date or with a certain serial number. It boils down to testing multiple modules..

I seem to remember reading that a Lumagen Radiance could solve this problem by adjusting the porch settings, thereby allowing the short retrace setting to be used. Can anyone confirm that they were able to run short retrace and eliminate HDM ringing by using a Radiance?

Aside from having someone ship a truck load of HDM's to test, are there any other options?

Thanks,

Justin

yes, set backporch to 1.7 or 1.8 us via a processor or pc and powerstrip or other customizable software.

i think all hdm modules exhibit this problem, maybe one more then the other but ringing is always there without enough retrace time.

Yes remove the varible rate resistors.,and replace with jumpers. The VRR's are the width slugs on the HDM. If your runnning 1080p only, they are not needed anymore.

Catch22. I could only run 1080p exclusively if I had a Radiance or similar video processor since cable comes in at 720p and 1080i. So either I ditch the cable box or buy the vp.

Dturco- have you actually removed the vrr and replaced with jumpers?

Yes, I have removed the VRR's.... weelll......I had it done. The picture is much more stable without them. I use 1080p exclusively without a VP. I just use the scaling in my Onkyo 885. Since I don't watch T.V through my projector I only have to deal with up-scaling DVD's.

I have a Radiance and have been wanting to look into how this is done! I hope someone chimes in. That ringing really gets on my nerves sometimes.

It is just a matter of adding more "backporch", it gives the beam a chance to settle.
You may need to adjust Hphase to compensate for centering.

I believe those are inductors and not resistors Smile
IT's one the many features on the marquee that shouldn't even be there in 2011, same goes for the relays which switch between the low and hi-band coils.

I guess I need to RTFM and find out how to do this with the Radiance.
