anyone know why the special features/deleted scenes etc look so much worse than the film?

watched Priest last night, and wife asked why the huge difference in pic quality - she presumes that the deleted scenes are the original footage, before mastering/special effects are added. her question is, how do they make that footage look so much better when they incorporate it into the film.

i haven't a clue what the issue is, and would like to be able to answer this convincingly. google has not been my friend.

thanks guys

ps:Priest stinks. save your dollars.

You are exactly right. Deleted scenes often are just the negatives they've developped but not very carefully. They have not been colour timed / balanced / graded. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_grading

Here's a shot before & after colour grading:

The top shot is often what you'll see in special features/deleted scenes. The editor will decide what scenes will be included in the movie before all this extra work happens. No point in doing extra work if it's not going to be in the movie. If the deleted scenes or extras look perfect it's because they've either cut the scene late (it was already 100% done) or they decided it was worth it just for deleted scenes or extras.

A 2 hour movie can easily have 400+ hours of footage to go through. No point in editing and grading it all.

They will sometimes also be scanned quickly at low-rez too which makes it look worse.

There's A LOT of work that goes in between the time they shooting onto film and it ends up on the Blu-ray. Not just obvious stuff you see like special computer generated effects.
