Only way to know is to try it but don't hold your breath. In order to power the HDFury the switch will need to be able to supply 5 volts at 400-500ma over the HDMI line. It's a definite maybe.

Don't worry about the 2000ma rating of the power supplies you see. The 'Fury will just draw what it needs. It's the voltage and the polarity you need to get right.

That definitely helps widen the field of doable power adapters, but this polarity thing is a big sticking point. I've looked all over, and every adapter I can find has the opposite polarity of what I need. That all have positive on the center pin.

Has anybody ever found a seller anywhere that sells adapters with a negative center pin? I can't find one anywhere. I also looked at all the adapters I have lying around my house, and same thing: the polarity is opposite of what I need.

Cut the cord and swap the leads. Polarity problem solved.

Wow, that's a great idea...you seem to really know a lot about all this. Now that you mention it sounds obvious, but for some reason I couldn't think of that. the 5V and the >= 500ma are easy to find, but that polarity was the sticking point. I think you just solved my problem.

Oh, I found an adapter lying around which is 5V, 2A max, which sounds fine, but the barrel won't quite fit in the hole, so I see there's one more parameter I'm going to need to adhere too: a pretty small barrel diameter. I'll keep looking to see if I have other adapters, but if I have to order one, I guess I'm going to need to specify diameter when I do the ordering.

The barrel diameter is pretty close to the cell phone adaptors for Nokia I believe it is.

It turns out my cell phone charger (an LG branded phone) looks like it'll fit. The barrel diameter is right, it's 5V, and it's 700 mA, but the polarity is positive on the center pin. I actually have two of these chargers (one for work, and one for home), so I'm thinking of using one of them. If I really need both, I could order another one.

So I'll need to flip the wires using your idea. Since I don't have much experience in this, I'm guessing this is the procedure:

1) Cut the wire
2) Shave off some insulation on both ends to expose both pairs of metal ends.
3) Reverse and connect by twisting both wires of each pair together.
4) wrap each twisted pair in electrical tape
5) maybe even wrap the two wrapped pieces together in tape to make it tidier.

That should work. Soldering the wires would be better. maybe try a local computer store/fix it shop?

Success! I followed your instructions, using my cell phone adapter (after reversing the polarity), and now even the cheap $8.90 unpowered HDMI switch I originally bought from Amazon works. Everything works now, even without powering the HDMI switch. Cool

I just need to decide whether to return the $26 HDMI switch I bought locally which has a remote control or return the cheap $8.90 switch which doesn't have a remote control.

My wife will be happy when she sees the success I have now.

I was also very careful not to plug in the adapter until after the polarity was corrected, because I think I read here that plugging in the wrong polarity can damage the HDfury.

Once again, I find myself indebted to this forum. Modifying a cell phone adapter like that felt like something MacGuyver would do. Smile

This all actually started when I moved the CRT monitor to the family room, so until now only I have used this screen but starting tomorrow my wife and son will also be viewing programming on that monitor.

It's a 32 inch 4:3 ratio, Monivision, model DM-6952S. I think that model comes with some kind of optional package with extra inputs, but I don't have that optional package, so I have to use the VGA input port with this monitor.
