Hey folks...especially y'all in the sticks without any access to seasoned calibrators...

...I am planning a driving trip from Detroit to San Diego for late September into Early October.

My targets include Taos and Albuquerque, NM, and perhaps Sedona, AZ...and obviously San Diego...but I'm coming from Detroit, and am not afraid of taking a northern route through Michigan's Upper Peninsula, through WI and MN. Haven't done the I-90 trip in a decade, and have some friends up in Idaho I might want to see. Montana would be nice, as well. SO, anything in-between Detroit and Taos is fair game and open to my master trip planning.

I'd like to extend an open invitation to contact me if you believe I might be of service to you getting your CRT dialed in 'just right', as well as performing any audio calibration, setup...or even remote control programming.

I'm well-versed in the Philips Pronto/Marantz 5400/5600/9500 and any of the Universal Remote Controls...and have the complete programming suite for the original Niles Intellicontrol.

I am not just a CRT guy, although I DO have odd gifting with them...as long as my screwdriver doesn't slip (if you caught that sorry saga of the Dwin from a week or so ago). I was a 'golden-eared' audiophile well before I was anywhere near interested in video...and can set up a mean turntable, too. There is nothing in an audio/video system that I cannot insure is connected properly, setup-menu adjusted correctly, or explain to even the least knowledgeable member of your household.

Curt and I have been discussing developing a program where I travel with the most-common failure items...and he'll perform board repairs and provide parts to my swapping boards and fully tweaking the results. It might be that we meet on my way TO San Diego, then do the work on the way back after the parts come in from Curt. Whatever works.

Don't shy away thinking I must be too expensive...I'm not going to turn anyone away with any reasonable offers.

SO...Dwin, Zenith, NEC/Runco, Electrohome/Vidikron, Barco/Runco, Sony, and yes...even Ampro...owners, and anyone who just wants their home theater perfected by one who has seen some of the best of 'em and has been around the industry since 1978 as an enthusiast, 1981 as a retailer, 1990 as a custom installer, 1996 as one of the Founding members of the Imaging Science Foundation (the third training seminar they EVER did was in Michigan, through the brain-storming of then Runco/Da-Lite rep Rob Ward), and finally as Technical Editor of Stereophile Guide to Home Theater in 2000-1...feel free to contact me at my personal e-address:

Tentative time frame is September 21st through October 11th, but it is obviously very flexible at this point. Only real appointments thus far is the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon festival in the first week of October.

Thanks for the consideration!

Sincerely,
John
Detroit

Curious.

Not any takers yet. Not any askers, either.

Funny thing.

Maybe this is all the proof I need that this industry is dead, and need to pursue something else.

It's been a wild ride, and used to be SO much fun.

Cheers,
John

OK, so I've got a few nibbles...so I'd like to apologize for the whining.

Anyone and everyone...no reasonable offers refused. Calibration rates are the same they've always been...when I was first through the ISF course, chasing Joe Kane and Joel Silver around the country...every time they were within a reasonable drive, I'd be there trying to learn more.

Those were the days.

At the end of the first day, of my first ISF training class, I stood up and asked why I was even there. I wanted to help my clients improve their video experience, not sell $20k projectors with $20 video processors. That would basically be the original Runco 980 with the Faroudja VP-400 quadrupler.

I now have the first ones of each of those I DID finally sell and install...sitting in a pile down in my studio. Surplus junk, they said, do you want it before it goes to the curb?!

My how the time has flown...1997 was a long time ago. It has been a long, winding, and totally fun road.

Cheers,
John
