Hey, I'm all for experimenting and keeping old sets alive. The only reason I don't do it anymore is because I'm running a business, and the PG sets are long past the point of 'economical' repair.
If, however, I only had one projector and it was a PG, you're darn right I'd spend countless hours recapping it and getting it to work.
Party on!

I think you meant to say if you only had a 9" LIQUID COUPLED PG10, you'd spend hours re-capping it!
I sure as hell wouldn't re-cap a pg-6.
I think the PG10 is an astounding projector when running and set up right. Were it not for the troubles I had with the Media center interface I'd still have mine. Fan noise and all.
But in the end I needed something that was windows friendly, as the whole house now runs on a central DVR server and a Silicon Dust 6 cable tuner device, all over ethernet.
Re-cap a PG10? Yep. Anything lower... maybe not.

Well, YEAH!!! But you know why I decided to change. I kinda HAD to, in order to preserve a fragile peace in the house.
Honestly, I don't regret it from a sheer "usability" point of view, and the picture is damn good! But it's not a PG10!! I'll admit that!

Yeah it is. I'm not going back, sorry.
Look at it this way.... it's been 2 years and I'm at 64 hours on the new projector. WHEN I use it, we just turn it on and watch a movie and turn it off. No fuss, no tweaking, no trouble with the media PC.
So why let a nice Tube set just rot away?
My hardcore HT days are OVER!!

if it wasn't for my curved screen I'd be checking out digitals too. The 10PG doesn't have enough power to really light up the 3.60 m wide screen so I also had a stack of two 10PG installed. However, that felt like the first time test riding a Suzuki GSR750 some 25 years ago. I got of the bike, cleaned the sh*t out of my pants and swore to never ever get such a fun toy again. I was afraid of getting used to it (an dfinally kinning myself too early). With the stack, there wouldn't have been any time left for movie watching.
To me, recapping means 500 chances to finally kill the projector. Probably it wasn't the cleverest of ideas to start practicing with the 4 layer point board.
This week I will be picking up this poor guys machine. Hopefully it's really "only" a broken power supply an dthe rest is good for another 4000 h.
By the way, your continued interst keeps up my spirit, thanks and keep going.

We have told you have to safely replace the caps on the multi layer NEC boards, its not hard, just rip them off and solder the new one to the old legs. Its very easy. No good reason you cant do it!!
It wont matter how many NEC PG sets you get to work with and use as spares for your set, if the boards are not recapped then someone will have to do it. There is no way around this.
I am very interested in seeing you get this big old beast up and running as good as it can be

Somewhere I postsed the list of caps needed to recap a 10PG. Search around its here somewhere.
I'm glad I did it.... It took time but well worth it in the end.

Let me just add that a list of caps is good, but you need good soldering skills, the ability to put the positive end of each cap into the right solder point ( ), and at this point, I personally would never work on a set that needed recapping without an ESR meter. that`s the quickest way to check caps, and perhaps bypass ones that don`t need changing.
Also, here`s a tip, replace EVERY 10uF and 47uF cap on any board, those are the ones that always leak.

Because this is a machine worth fixing. Why are you here asking that question? |
It has been tried several times now.

What has? Tried to be fixed? I dont see any evidence of a proper shot at it yet...
