That about sums it up- a lot of hours!
What it basically boils down to is using the random access green to align the grid perfectly. I started with 800P/72 and have gone through 3 different set ups until I was 100% happy with the result. While getting rid of the banding took some time, getting optimal linearity horizontally was just as time consuming. For some reason the Horizontal C-linearity is really funky for this resolution/refresh. On my PJ, it has to be set to zero with a lot of manual random access adjustments to get things dialed in.
1080P/48 was a lot easier to set up as the linearity adjustments took less time. I still used the random access green but with less fiddling.
In both cases I taped off my screen's center lines horizontally and vertically. Then I used a yard stick to carefully measure the grid squares, circles, etc. I found that the more precise I dialed in the vertical linearity, the less evident the banding became until it was finally gone. The hardest part is keeping your sanity after looking at the screen for hours
