In the PSU or on the mother board? Nothing obvious on the mother board.

I'd suspect something in the power supply, how's the regulation? If you put a meter on there what does it read?

Maybe one memory slot is having trouble. If the opportunity presents itself again, I'd try one stick at a time. Now that you are up and running you may consider replacing that board. Hopefully with the same model so you don't have to reload the os.
These linux distro's are much more efficient. I have not checked this nugget personally, however I suspect that using a linux distro did not use as much memory as windows would. So that it may have never gone to the bad slot on the motherboard for more memory. You could also check to see if there are updated bios drivers for your mother board.

I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu so I don't understand. I first ran Ubuntu off the CD. Then I was able to install Ubuntu on the HD and everything ran fine. |
Linux doesn't use the MBR on the disk--if I remember correctly. How about using the install media and choose repair. You should get an option to have a DOS-like prompt whereby you can do an 'fdisk /mbr' to clear out the master boot record. There have been cases in which it was corrupted.
I am not sure if anyone has recommended this before, but go plug the drive into another computer as a main drive, install a base Windows OS, then delete all drivers in the Hardware Manager and power down. Then reconnect the drive in the troubled PC and be ready with the drivers for that PC (maybe load the drivers to a convenient folder beforehand.

If the memory test was free then it may have trouble with ddr memory.
