I want a marquee and i found one cheap on ebay for $99, but it says in the auction:
'We powered this projector on, but it immediately shows the H-FAIL ERROR LIGHT and DOES NOT LIGHT UP THE TUBES."
What is wrong with it and how much would it cost to fix? Or is it hard to tell with only that information?

I will be able to answer this, but we first have to wait until I get my crystal ball out of the shop. For some reason, it kept clouding up. I'm thinking it only needs a tune up.
Just kidding of course..
It would be hard to know what could be causing that problem. It could be one of several boards in that Marquee, or simply the Horizontal board needs to be re-seated. But for only $99.00 and depending on what the shipping amount is. I could be a good deal, but that's only if there's not a serious problem in it. If you already own a marquee, it could make for a good parts machine.

i don't own a Marquee. it would be my first, I'd sell my ECP machine...
Thinking maybe pick it up in Christiansburg, VA where its located when my sister and I go to Virginia Beach sometime this summer haha. Surely they'd hold it for me until I was able to pick it up. Wonder if it would fit in the back of a Honda CRV.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Not sure about it fitting in a CRV, but moving from an ECP to a Marquee makes for a good move for someone wanting to move up in CRT.

It will fit in a CRV. I Picked up an 8500 and an 8501LC in my 2003 With no problems with the rear seats folded.
Good score if it is not major.

Think I'll just have it shipped, $140 to a business and 175 for a residence. Why is there a price difference? Not sure how she'd be about putting that monster in her car. Plus I'll have the freight guy help carry it in the house. :/

Good luck with getting help. Usually they are not helpful.
They are not too heavy...... I carried mine into my house myself.

i couldn't even lift my ecp by myself. the CAF freight guy helped me carry it in last time.

Let me know if you go through with the marquee; I can come help you (you are 3.5hrs away from pittsburgh as I recall) move it around in July, though I can't claim experience with the marquees. I am interested in buying your ECP, too -- PM me and we can discuss.

I bought one from them few months ago, was expecting a parts machine and that's what I got. Since it was a 1996 the P14 voltage was of course way over so the B and R tubes were dead. I was surprised when it actually powered up though and lit the one good tube. 
HDM error can very often be fixed by sliding the HDM out, removing the small daughter board, deoxit the pins, then re-assemble. For some reason that little board get's really corroded, the last 2 HDM's I had here for HD mod's it was actually difficult to get off. A 10$ bottle of Caig with the little applicator brush will be your most important tool if your looking to restore an old marquee, and don't doubt that at this point a restoration is what your looking at.

I bought a used M7500 ('95 june bulit) in december 2010 and got a 5600hrs machine with fair tubes, and even didn't have problem with P14 It was sleeping in a dusty storage room, for a long time. I'm just saying that bulit date means nothing.
If I could buy one in that shape for the same price in Hungary I would go for it without thinking. The boards are cheap for marquees and with a little luck (and patience) you can grab cheap tubes for it too -if it is neccesary.

really? You bought one marquee and came to the conclusion the build date means nothing, that's amazing.
I've bought dozens of marquee's over a period of 7 years and 90% of the ones from 1996 through most of 1997 had the P14 voltage problem and one or more dead tubes or very weak tubes requiring high G2 settings.
