|
|
I've been thinking about offering LVPS repair. I checked with Curt and he is ok with it. So I wanted to throw out a feeler to see if there is much of a demand before I go about setting up for this.
Anybody have a dead supply that they would like to have repaired? Do these supplies go bad very often?
Questions or comments all welcome......

I first need to acquire a test projector if I'm going to get involved in this. This is why I started this feeler thread. To see if it's worth while.
Experimenting is not required. If I decide to do this it will be success.

It aint worth it Mac. The supplies are usually selling for anywhere from $20.00 to $50.00 - and you'll first need to get an entire Marquee in order to do the repairs.
And if you move forward, the power supplies are made by Microenergy. The exception is the later version one that VDC had manufactured elsewhere.
There are three different versions of the Microenergy Marquee supply.
But if you have nothing else to do and would want to tackle these supplies, it would be fun project, because once you get beyond the version with the weak pots, they are very well made and rarely fail.
I love repairing power supplies, but I prefer a different type of supply altogether. Below is one of the many I get to play with. It's one of the smaller ones, but is a very complicated design. The challenge I like with them is to find ones I can't repair.

Yeah, I'm getting that feeling. I thought there would be more of a demand for this. But there doesn't seem to be much interest. Thats why I tried this feeler thread first. Guess I'll look for something else to do.

Sometimes you guys make it real easy to bash on Marquees. Good thing I don't really think this way...... as it's all in fun..

99% probability that niether one is in working condition but I think you should grab one and poke around inside. In lieu of repairs you could also offer upgraded/re-built LVPS. A nicely re-built power supply with quieter or better isolated fans would have some market for it.
Or, you might stumble across something else interesting inside that people might want. The only real problem with what you're thinking of doing and with what i'm doing with Marquee's is that it's 5 years after the fat lady sang her song.

do the 8110s come with a 2035-03p vim or is it just pure luck to get one?

I've seen them in both 8110 and 8500, 1996 model year only, I'de guess less than 5% of the machines came with that VIM

I know its somewhat late coming but I'm not looking for daily or even weekly repairs. Just something else to fill the gaps as I'm still doing some AVR's, Pioneer freezing, power amps, flat panels and whatever else I can make a few bucks at..
But to do this I would want to make sure there was enough initial repairs to cover the costs of setup, meaning acquiring a projector. After that an occasional repair would be fine.
Plus there seems to be a lot of marquee owners and no one else is offering LVPS repairs, at least not that I have seen. I was also considering branching out into HVPS repairs on the Marquee also if the market is there.
But it's awful quite around here lately so maybe everyone is going digital.
Maybe that will be a viable option. I'm currently in the process of realigning the panels in an LCD projector that are not adjustable. I believe I will have success on that but will know better in a few days.
