The orders for new Marquees have been slowing down. It looks like this batch might be the last of them. This order is for twelve and after this? Who knows? VDC will make them if there is demand but this might be it. The last new production CRT projectors

The LED projector is about all we are selling as far as new projectors go. There are still lots of CRT sales to support the simulator market. Those will probably be happening ten years from now. The last dozen projectors that we are building right now will go into new simulators. They won't be going away anytime soon. Might be expensive but if you want to keep your CRT projector you will be able to get new tubes for it.

That is my only concern: Getting new/new glass rebuild tubes.

So not the Sony, not the WUXGA DLP, or any of the other digitals, just the LEDs, hmm. No new AMPRO let alone new ESCPs either, I guess.

I'm confused by this post. your first post said that CRT sales are slow, here above you're saying there's lots of CRT sales?
I don't really see an issue for Marquee parts short of the tubes even if VDC stops making them. There's Marquees in abundance out there, you just need to know where to look. I don't think this crowd here has ever bought anything new parts-wise from VDC, save for me when I bought some Ultra chips from Tim.
What's important to me is that Scott and the other great guys at VDC keep their jobs, regardless whether it's working with digitals or CRTs. I know that I personally have had a major upswing in service and sales in the last month, it made up for the last 3-4 months that were completely dead. I think the core group here can support CRTs worldwide for the next 10 or so years, after that only the late model Marquees and Barcos will still have any life left in them simply due to component age. IN 10 years from now, I want one of the 12 that you're building today.

Curt,
I think he may have meant parts supply from the large amount of sim CRTs that are still out there. I think that the contract states that they will be able to supply parts for ten years.

I believe he meant CRT projector sales are slow but CRT tubes will still be made for quite some time to support the simulator market.

Guys
I sent this e.mail over the weekend to a serial projector buyer I have dealt with for about nine years:
Dear John (yeah I made up a name) following a chat with Ron Ordway, El Presidente of VDC:
"I have talked with my supplier of the picture tubes, both eight and nine inch types, that we use in
building projectors for your customers. The Japanese company that made precision glass components
for projection tubes have closed the factory for tube glass; my suppliers here in the US have bought
the entire glass stockpile in order to continue tube production here. I have seen a few of these US-made
tubes and the quality is superb.
However, the stockpile of remaining new glass is shrinking weekly, and in two years or so we may have
to rely on salvaging glass from worn tubes to make rebuilt tubes, no more virgin tube glass in two years. I
would urge you to survey your customers to determine if they wish to stockpile their own spare tubes for
future use.
For every 5 projectors, I would advise stocking 12 to 15 green tubes, 8 to 10 blue tubes, and 6 reds to ensure
enough spares looking out 12 to 15 years. Green wears the fastest as it provides 60% of the light needed for
a projected image.
We see no problem having sufficient spares of all other Marquee circuit boards and power supplies, it is new
tubes that will be depleted soonest.
Let me know if you wish to institute the purchase of spares, we will try to get you the best prices on quantities."
Those here wishing to stockpile new Marquee CRTs need to contact me before too long, I will try to get us a group rate.

Oooops. I should have said there are lots of tube sales....... The guys working in the tube room are busy.

Dammit, too bad you're at the opposite end of where I am. There's something damn sexy about an assembly line of CRTs (and yes, I know I'm weird that way)
I really wanted to see that before the production shut down.
Do you know if stuff will be sold off regarding the production line? Or will it all just be put on ice in case an order comes through next year? Heck, it would be really cool to own a piece of equipment used to make Marquee sets, whether it's a partially stuffed board, or a rollaround table, as the one in my shop has seen better days..
