I just received a Dwin HD700 today. I have no idea how to aim the tubes mechanically or maximize the tubes. There are width adjustments in the onscreen menus but they are at 100% and it is no where near centered on the tube. It is just a small area inside the tube. I am using a line doubler for now. The Extron box I have will have to wait until I get the cable for it.

Has anybody had any experience with these before? How do i do these basic things? or Do I need the Dwin transcoder? Please say no. So far, I can't get it to converge or anything, there has to be some kind of mechanical adjustment inside where i can stick a screwdriver. The menus are useless. The manual also is no help.

What does the manual say about raster sizing and centering?

I have a cable coming to me. its a Mac/quadra cable, I have a mac to VGA adapter which should work.. I hope.

And i don't know it says a lot of things about centering and adjusting, none of which help. I can't even move the lenses when I loosen the nuts they say to loosen in the manual to adjust the aim of the blue and red. :/ this sucks.

You have to have a signal going to it to converge stuff. I don't know of a good way to center raster without removing the lenses. Good luck removing them it sucks. You can to eyeball it with some sunglasses on.

Isn't the manual useless.

I can see just by looking inside with the contrast turned down that its like a postage stamp sitting in the middle. I don't know how to expand it to fill the whole thing. And the convergence menus does nothing, the blue and red won't move in enough to match the green. I upgraded from an ECP and i could set that just fine. I have a 720p signal feeding into it with a DVI to VGA adapter on my G5 now. I set a negative sync with an app on the mac.

I see white adjustments on the neckboards to put a screw driver in... will that adjust the screen width? and like i said, the tubes aren't budging when I hold it by the lens. is there a place I should be holding in the back of the neck of the tube? I'm afraid to touch there, don't wanna get electrocuted.

DO NOT go adjusting stuff in the set. I would start with 640 X 480. I've never had a DWIN with too little width, but all the functions of the set are controlled by the remote. THere are no hidden trimpots within the set...well there are, but don't touch them. They don't need adjusting.

Like an NEC, you need to enter a signal entry into the unit first, otherwise the adjust and setup/convergence menus will be hidden. Download the manual off this site if you don't have it. If the test patterns internally are way too narrow, then you have a fault on the CPU board or the motherboard. I'd guess that the test patterns should fill the screen at 100% width though.

ok, I turned the width pot but i'll just put it back. but, yeah, the width is way too narrow. Is this PC board worth replacing? Who would have one and Am I able to get to it to replace it? :/ damn what a bummer.

Yeah, there are trims but they are unmarked and without knowing the limits of the voltages on the board and age of the set it is VERY likely you will roach it.

Edward really ran these things conservatively, and kept all service info VERY close to the vest. I bet I've got some notes around here somewhere on 'em...but they might be on old computer back-up discs. Some in storage with an old 700 and 500 chassis I keep around for nostalgia tickles and grins.

The ONLY way I ever got them to behave was to have Contrast WAY down around 10 to 15, on very small screens...but the one I used in LA when I was with Stereophile GHT driven by that uber-expensive Ayre DVD 480p player is STILL the best video image I've ever lived with.

If you need any tips, hit me up through e-mail: jjgannon(at)ix.netcom(dot)com (replace the stuff in parenthesis with the respective signs, I'm not fond of feeding the spambots)

Cheers,

yeah Curt told me that its probably a faulty motherboard or CPU board. and to send them to him to test. i'll replace when I get some cash. he said the test patterns at least should fill the whole screen and its way too narrow as well. Ultimately I play on using it with an 87 inch (width, not diagonal) 16:9 screen. even with it F-ed up, i could tell it was much sharper than my ecp. Could see the scanning lines. Razz
