Hey Guys,

I found a pair of JBL 4311b studio monitors and a pair of L100A century speakers locally. The seller is asking $300 for the 4311b monitors and $175 for the L100A's. From my little searching this seems like a pretty nice price and I've been lusting after a pair of 4311's since I heard some a few years ago.

Now for my questions, I've seen pictures of the 4311b's and they look very clean and well kept. I've only seen partial pictures of the L100A's but from what I can see they're pretty rough. I don't mind that and honestly I'd rather save the $125 difference and get the L100A's to refinish at some point if the drivers are all clean. I've read that the two should sound almost indistinguishable, is there any real reason to get the 4311b's over the L100A's other that aesthetics?

Anything important I should know about these speakers before I go to take a look?

Thanks!

Grab them both. Check for woofer foam rot, I think the L100As have foam surrounds. If they are OK, and you can refinish them, you can get more than your money out of them. Great pricing on both, they won't last.

<edit>, just googled the L100s. I believe those were the consumer versions of the 4311. Still, grab both! Foam rot shouldn't be an issue as they are rolled paper surrounds impregnated with some crap that never dies. Smile

Hey Curt,

Drove over, auditioned and bought both pair, just got back an hour or so ago and have been thoroughly enjoying them since I got then wired up.

The 4311's are in next to new condition with only one minor scratch on a corner and they sound excellent as I expected. A real step up from the L77's I had been using. The L100's are a little rough around the edges and one of the dust caps is a little dented but they sound excellent and should be pretty easy to clean up.

I negotiated a little with the seller and got both pair for $430 total. I think it was a trip well spent! Smile
