Guys!

Curt, Mike Parker and myself may be in the Orlando-Cape Canaveral area in the April 17th-20th range, and we would welcome the chance to meet any of youse guys and tip a few beers, so, who is available? We will pin down the dates better in the next few weeks.

Since that's pretty much home territory for me, there's a good chance I can make it. Maybe Tse can come, too.

Heck, maybe he can arrange a slightly better than average VDC factory tour for the group.

That sounds good to me. There is more nightlife in Orlando, but it depends on what you guys want to do. I don't mind hanging out at a bar, but it will depend on whether this is a one or two day trip. As many times as I have passed by, I have never toured the Cape. I may have to do that this time, as I have already seen the Stennis Space Center.

Will there be any door prizes like a free Ampro? Mr. Green

I will be in Orlando for a Disney World trip with the family for this week. I can probably break free for awhile.

Excellent! As we get into April I will ask everyone to PM me with phone numbers so we can organize a meeting spot, perhaps a restaurant on the beach.

Dude, if you're a space geek at all, you gotta go. I **worked** at the Cape one summer in college. That was an amazing experience for a space freak like me. I worked on several launches, got to watch several others from close-up, etc.

On one launch I worked, we were doing a dry-run and I had an hour or two free before the next event that required my attention. So I turned it over to my partner, left the blockhouse, climbed all over the launch tower, took the elevator to the top of the booster, and even went up into the flame chute and stared STRAIGHT UP into the nozzles of the rocket exhaust. That was a VERY strange feeling, even though I knew the thing wasn't fueled up... Mr. Green

That was 35 years ago so I don't know what shape things are in today. Might be kind of depressed with the shuttle program winding down. Still, it would be worth a visit.

Yeah, that looks like the visitor center. They've obviously added a lot (shuttles) since the last time I was there. If I remember right the visitor center is outside the Kennedy Space Center proper. It's a LOT cooler if you can get onto the base, climb around on the Crawler, go visit Pad 39A/39B, etc. Looks like they offer tours -- check out http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com.

You have got me psyched. It looks like a two day pass is $41 and a year pass is $53. Might as well get a year pass. Wink

Spanky, shuttle Discovery is scheduled to take off on Feb. 24th. That would be a great time to run up there and buy a pass....

And for the rest of you planning for this CRT shindig, Endeavour is scheduled for April 19th!

http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/schedule.html

I'm sure you can't get onto the base proper during the launch (unless tse has more pull than I thought Smile) but you can see it pretty well from several places. I think the visitor center is the closest you can get, but I'm sure it's a madhouse to get there on a launch day, especially if you try to take the causeway from the west. Maybe you can take hwy 3 to the south edge of the base, and just go as far north on it as they'll let you? I think you could get within about 4-5 miles that way. Or you can see it pretty well from the beach at Cape Canaveral, or from the Titusville area.

Even from that distance, a shuttle launch is an awesome thing to see. Don't miss it if you can possibly make it.
