|
|
My son the scrounger came up with a Pioneer CLD-D503 dual-side CD / CDV / LD player. It works, but no remote.
Is this worth anything? I see some players listed on ebay, but none of this model. And the only ones that sell seem to be ones that include a bunch of LD movies in the deal. A Pioneer CLD-D504 didn't get any bids with a $0.99 minimum.
Is it worth a listing or should I just tell him to tear it apart for entertainment? Or would somebody here want it for cost of shipping?

no AC-3, in fact looks like no digital output at all. pretty much worth nothing unless you have no other way of playing a LD collection you already own and really miss.
and i say that as someone who does have a large laserdisc collection and two players...

I have a commercial pioneer LD player with serial control, etc. It's compatible with the old dragons lair laserdiscs, where you run a computer to control it via rs232 and use the Daphne emulator to interact with it.
anyways, I've been thinking of offering it up for free for anyone that wants it. it's only analog though, no digital output.

I have one of those commercial pioneer LD players as well - i think that the model number is a 7922. what a beast - must weigh over 50 lbs.
i found the dragon's lair love-in forum and offered it up for free there, shipping only. didn't get a single nibble. if you find someone who wants yours, let me know if he wants a second.

I think the only real value in any of the LD players out there, are mainly the Pioneer Elite series players. The Elite series featured digital audio out, gold plated connections, and depending on the elite model, a copper chassis.
The bigger thing about these players was if they could play DVDs, mainly the DVL models. If it isn't an elite model or a model that plays DVDs as well, its pretty much not worth squat.
Models worth $50 or more:
CLD-59 , CLD-79, CLD-99 , DVL-90 , DVL-91 , and the best one pioneer produced: the LD-S2 (MSRP of $3200!)
Those are some of the elite models that are worth anything at all. If your model isn't an elite, or one of those models, it is WORTHLESS
Also if any of you have a LD-S2 let me know please! I would be interested in it. My only real interest in LD players is the fact that the high end pioneers have some wicked CD playback for quality. Music just sounds better off a CD in a nice LD player!

I should also note if it has component outputs regardless of its "elite" standing, that it is probably worth something as well!

I sold a D503 to upgrade to unit that had AC3 RF. I got $35 + shipping on ebay in january for it. BUT BEWARE. The 503-505/603-605 machines (I can't remember if it is the alpha or epsilon flipper) has a part that broken ON BOTH of my "upgrade" machines during shipping. I was able to get a $4 replacement from pioneer usa and fixed'em up and resold them, but the sellers had to refund me (I kicked back some of the proceeds after I re-sold them). Anyway, the third unit arrived A-OK and I kept it. So if you sell them, hope you are lucky or the little bugger will break. Maybe not worth the risk unless via CL locally.
The D704 and its mitsubishi labeled clone are reputed to be just as good, if not better than some of those jeremy listed. I think the elite 59 is not so good. Also, I've seen people complain the DVD sliders aren't as good, but dunno.

The reason it broke is because there is a shipping screw that is in all of these units when originally shipped by pioneer to keep them from breaking.
No one who lists these usually know that and thus they get damaged. I myself had the same thing get damaged with my epsilon Pioneer elite CLD-59 disc player. I got a refund from the seller.
When I repaired it I was told by someone who did some LD repair in the old days that they came with shipping screws on the bottom of the players to keep any parts from moving.
Check sometime and you should see a screw hole for where they put the shipping screw.

I think a lot of the old serial control models, etc needed that screw, you are right. However, I could never find the shipping hole.
So, in trying to find out, I found the guy who seemed to me like the "Curt Palme of LD players" (Kurtis Bahr) on some site (AVS?) told me they stopped doing those shipping screws. He said it was a material selection problem and the replacement part was a new plastic. When the new part came, it was actually a different part number for use on later models...so they fixed the issue, I guess. He said to be confident in shipping after the part was swapped and no problems were had (3 for 3 vs 1 for 3).

I sold my Pioneer LD player and my LD collection on ebay around 2001 or so. I do remember getting some good money on some of the laser discs because they hadn't been released on DVD yet. Of course now, there are probably only a few titles that never made it to DVD. Besides the fact that you couldn't fit a whole movie on one side, I loved the look and sound of laser discs. They had that film-feel that I don't think DVDs were ever able to produce.
