I currently have a Sony D50 with about 1500 hours on the tubes, and the picture is pretty darn good, (compared to the beaters I used to run). I now have a chance to get a G70 (with an HDMI input board of unknown make) with 5,500 hours on the tubes. Assuming the tubes are in decent condition should I make the change? Not sure if this makes a difference but I am currently running a 100" screen and the front of the lenses are about 10' from the screen.

A G70 is a huge upgrade from a D50 - if the tubes are in good shape.
I can't imagine a G70 with 5500 hours on it not having significant wear on the tubes, but I'd definitely check it out for the right price.

Done! It actually had 4K hrs on it and had almost no visible burn in (using a flashlight through the lenses). It was a one owner unit (the owner wanted a DLP) that has been professionally calibrated every year by the guy I bought it from, who said he under drove (not sure if that is the term) the setup. I am stoked, and all for $500. Plus My d50 is in good shape so I can sell that one and end up not spending much at all in the end. Oh yeah, the unit came with all the manuals, the remote, a bracket, and a remote for the HDMI card.
I feel like I got a good deal.

While others have gotten better deals, this is still a great deal especially if you didn't have to ship it. If the tubes are as good as you say, then you can be happy for the next couple of years. Well, at least until a $500 9" falls in your lap.

Congrats! Can't wait to hear your reaction to the picture quality, black level and color accuracy. Can we see some photos?

And that is ALL that matters, if you're happy with the projector and what you got it for, that's great !

So between me, my buddy, two 45lbs weights and a little pulley action we got her hung today. I just finished pulling and cleaning the lenses, and the tube faces still look good to me. I cant see any wear on the red or blue, and I'd call the green an 8-9 with a wear pattern that is almost edge to edge on the raster. So far so good...
I am also noticing a slight giddy feeling inside, is this normal?

Yes. Totally. Get used to it.
Seriously, I've been watching mine for a couple of years now and I still get that giddy feeling occasionally!
G70 setup is pretty involved, so feel free to ask questions if you can't find what you're looking for by search!
Cheers,
SC
PS - Have you run across the G70 owners' thread?

YEP! I went from a ECP 4500 to a Zenith 1200x. Every part of the purchase was exciting from arranging shipping with YRC, dealing with customs agents, picking it up at the clearing house, removing the 100 screws from the crate and watching it sleep on my livingroom floor to sleep the night.
I tried my best to hoist all 148lbs to the ceiling myself, tossing every every cushion and jacket on the floor in case it fell, to no avail with only 6" to go. It was quite the workout. If I used the chain method I would have been set.
Still, the best part is the reaction of friends when they come over thinking how ridiculous yet amazing it is. A year later I still find it hard to believe I own it. It's just a beautiful looking machine even when off.
