Mark has a point. I have an XG1351 sitting here with new tubes, never used, and not worth the $ to have someone come in and set it up for use. I'm not a CRT calibrator and the cost to have someone else come in would easily buy a disposable 1080P digital for general (not critical) use, or but me 3-4 lamps for my existing digital projector. And considering I have two plasmas and an LCD elsewhere in the home, and only me and the wife, its hard to justify another room being equipped with imagine equipment.

Mark, thanks for this statement, I think the prices for PGs and XGs will drop significantly by now and make sourcing cheaper for me. |
That statement has been posted on CRT forums for years now, and every time I read it, it still pisses me off. 
Yeah, digital projectors were better in 2001 than they were in 1999, and are better in 2011 than they were in 2009. Mark, if you don't like CRT, then why bother posting here?
Everyone knows that CRT pricing has dropped steadily every year. Heck, I turn down people wanting to sell me projectors every day. Yesterday it was someone wanting to sell me a Zenith PRO 851 for a 'mere' $100. (shipping from NYC would have been $200+) 
Why bother wasting your typing saying that mid grade CRTs are crap? Seriously Mark, go spend your time going into vintage car forums, and go tell them that a 2011 Honda is a better car than what they are trying to repair. Better yet, tell them to forget cars and go green and ride bikes. I'm sure you'll be warmly embraced. 
Wan, why not sell the set to Hansiliii for $50 plus shipping? Two problems solved in one post. The whole point of CRT at this point is to set it up yourself. I'm sure that Ken Whitcomb would agree, with the rare exception (Cliff comes to mind), it's not really worth it for a pro ISF guy to set up any CRT at this point.

Curt and all,
I was about to add a "... but that's gonna piss off Curt" to my last Post. Personally I do not think that any enthousiastic recommendation will drive a newbie into CRT neither will it disencourage them. The ones allready into CRT projectors can judge for their own.
Yes, I would be happy to find an XG with new tubes for this price. The new tubes only would do!

The other XG advantage not mentioned so far is that they have 2 expansion slots for optional input cards. That way you can take advantage of moome or other HDMI cards without using an external switcher or external converter box. Also, XG's all have S-vid and composite inputs which is optional on PG's (why bother using that, though  ).

For the most part, yes, but you'd be surprised how many digital owners switch back to CRT once they go through 2-3 sets, and 5-10 bulbs.
I realized I probably overreacted this morning to my post from Mark AW, it's not like he hasn't posted the same thing over and over. THe difference between other CRT users and myself is that I make my living from CRT. Actually, I'd say in 2010 I made 90% of my living from CRT. Next year it probably will be 80% as pricing and demand goes down even more. So I do take negative comments personally that are posted here on this forum.
I'm sure Mark would also have a comment if one day I decided to close my website due to lack of interest. Ha!
No question that digitals have improved every year, but there are still many things attractive about CRT, esp. the dropping prices.

And the size is attractive! I have yet to see on person not impressed by CRT PJs because they are huge, plus they are fascinated to see 3 individual colors project into a crisp clear full color image.
Thats what got me to like CRT!
And if Wan doesnt want his XG Ill buy it!  I want to do a stack or blend

When I bought the JVC I could not buy any of the in stock G90's of 9500LCs from you. They were all out of my budget. Adding a $2K processor and paying someone $1K to do a setup for my already-owned XG was the same as buying the alternative.
I still have the XG--its not worth anything to sell even with new green and blue tubes--but even if I buy a used VP50 for $500 I am still looking at +$1K to have someone come in and do the setup and calibration for me. That's still a tough sell as it amounts to five new OEM lamps for the JVC.
Of course, I would be open to bartering for someone's services.
