|
|
I am currently running a late model BG808s (while I work trough the maintenance thread on my 8500 with minty tubes) and have recently fork out for HD145's, a Moome EXT V2, and a Harmony 900. I'm looking at getting a VP so I can properly do 1080p (trim the porches) or 1080i at 72 or 96Hz.
Right now I have my PS3, WDTV Live, and a HD STB (cable) all set to 1080i(feeding through HDMI), as well as a Wii and VCR (connected component 480p and composite 480i resepectively) all connected through an Onkyo 706 reciever (set to 1080i). The Onkyo takes care of all switching and upconverting tasks at the moment and is set to output everything at 1080i. I run HDMI from the reciever to the projector, where the Moome box lives then in to thte projector. I am quite happy with this setup, but I do see the classic interlacing artifacts from time to time on fast pans and rolling text.
I would love to throw a VP into the works but with the above recent expendatures, my wife has put me on a budget of $500 CAD or less. I MAY be able to push that up a bit, but not by much.
This budget constraint rules out any of the more current Lumagen's, and if I have been reading correctly the DVDO Edge and Duo do not allow for custom resulution, so they are out as well. That leaves me with the VP50pro, also out of the price rage, or the VP50 if I want to attempt 1080p at some point.
I have seen serveral VP50's that would fall inside my budget, but I'm a little unsure as to what I would be giving up by cheaping out on a VP50 rather than saving up fpr the Pro. I know I'd be giving up HDMI1.3 and I ave no desire to to 3D anytime soon (I hate the idea of active glasses), but is there anything else?
Please feel free to suggest any alternatives or maybe there is a better place to spend my money.
Cheers,
Alan

It accepts 1080p In at 24 hz too so you can then go to 1920x800p@72 for scope movies. you'll love it.

If I had to choose between the above Lumagen HDP and a DVDO VP50 (non pro) and they were the same price, which would be the better buy?

Just closed the deal on the HDP over on Videogon. I think I got it for a fair price.
Now for the agonizing wait and fingers crossed that it will get here to put under the tree! I hate shipping anything this time of year. I'm waiting for my Harmony 900 to show up as well as a Sharp LC46LE820UN I picked out for my parents this year. At least my Blu-ray's showed up from Amazon today!!!
I guess ounce the HDP shows up, the next step is looking at calibration gear. When I brought home my 'free' Marquee 2 years ago and told SWMBO that we could have a cheap theater I don't think she (or I) anticipated contracting 'upgraders syndrome'!
Cheers,
Alan

I was planning on locating the HDP in the cabinet with my reciever, feeding it HDMI from the reciever (used for switching sources) then it's output to the moome converter at the projector. Doing it this way I would lose the benefits HDMI 1.3 (mainly deep color) and also be limited to 8bit RGB on the digital out of the HDP.
I was thinking this evening that if I was to locate the HDP at the projector and feed the HDMI from the reciever to the Moome card, the RGBHV from the moome card to the HDP and then use the analog out of the HDP to the projector, that should get me around any HDCP issues and would allow me to maintain YPbPr 422 10 bit through the entire chain wouldn't it? I"ve got a false ceiling in the theatre so it wouldn't be an issue tucking it up between the joists (just a pain to get at for adjustments though). This should work, right?

Just curious how this has all turned out for you...?
I'm expecting a DVDO HD in a few days as part of a trade (simple upgrade from my ancient DEC IDC-3000) and am already thinking I want to shoot for an HDP or something with nice greyscale and gamma management...the gammax is OK, but I still feel like it isn't "right" enough image for what I want. If I can sell my HD10Fs I can probably slip such a purchase in without getting a shoe to the head from The Warden.
