What do you think of the condition of this green tube from a G90?

The raster is not square, and is a bit off center.

How much would this affect the image? The setup of the set?

Your thoughts?

That off to the side pattern is normal for the G90. Experienced calibrators set it up that way to avoid ringing on the left side of the image on the screen.

I think it will be fine for 16x9 or 2.4 aspect.

No way Tom. The image should be in the center of the tube with a proper setup. The trick you are thinking of is to put the image off center in the raster, not the phosphor.

This technique isn't just for G90 either, the trick works well with Marquee machines too.

I haven't had any trouble getting YA boards or IC421 parts lately at all. I've been sitting on a perfect YA board for a few months now and no one needs it. This problem is over exaggerated with the G90 and in my opinion is not really a problem.

Also, there may be a perfect solution very soon if it becomes an issue in the future...

Agreed.

However, you could work with this tube if you are willing to align the projector such that the image stays within the wear pattern.

i was beginning to doubt my setup, my raster is off center even over the edge of the tube on the left side, i tried to get the active image centered the best i could.
when doing this you need to make sure the g2 is low enough so it doesnt light up the raster.

Right, but the image will wear the tube not a raster if the Black level is set right. So it is possible that this G90 was set up correctly to avoid ringing and thus the off center wear pattern from the image being off center in the raster.

And yes All CRT's can use this trick.

If you can stay within the wear you'll probably be ok. My Runco had similar light wear though smaller area and I ended up replacing the tube. Staying in the wear would have ended up putting my projector beyond the existing mount and going outside the wear area was immediately obvious on screen and drove me nuts. I ended up getting one of Greg's tubes and it is working great.

Right, but the image will wear the tube not a raster if the Black level is set right. So it is possible that this G90 was set up correctly to avoid ringing and thus the off center wear pattern from the image being off center in the raster.

Not sure what you mean? A G90 like any projector should have the image in the center of the tube if you have the projector mounted with good orientation to the screen. The raster can be anywhere as long as the image is in the center of the tube. The wear pattern will be where the image is located on the tube.

It is not good practice to have the image off center on the face of a G90 tube and having the image off the phosphor center will not reduce raster ringing at all. Moving the image to the far side of the raster will reduce raster ringing, but moving the image on the phosphor will not change raster ringing.

RogueChili is working on a solution. I talked to him over the phone in detail on what he has done. I don't want to say because I don't know what was confidential, but I will say that he is one sharp cookie and...

...his approach is totally different than what has been discussed before and that he is close and most likely will get there.

My green looked like that with only 500 hrs on the clock. You will notice the burn on the screen and it was annoying enough for me to get a replacement from VDC. I also too the opportunity for Charlie to install the correct green C element at the same time.

Replacing the Ya board with a series of on/off switches, because that's all it really is? Mr. Green

I'm thinking that one could emulate the whole Ya board with some external CPU board, but HOW to do it is way way above me. Whatever Rogue is working on, best of success, that's for sure!

The IC421 problem seems to come in waves. I think a number of the owners with bad Ya boards junked their sets, I know I got at least two of them. Several other working G90s were parted out, I sold one Ya board, and know of at least one other G90 owner that bought a second set for parts. So I don't think the problem is underrated, the customers with sets simply dealt with the issue as they saw fit. ONce a couple of these gov't sound jobs pay, I will grab that Ya board off you, but I've sunk my cash flow into sound installs recently rather than buying more projector stuff.

Run the tube like that. Just make sure you set up in the wear pattern.
Most G90 G tubes loo like that from the factory at 500-1000 hrs because they run the gain at 255

isn't that the same guy who solved the "unsolvable" 1292 streaking issue? If so then he sounds like the perfect candidate to address the YA board

I don't know Tom, your restaurant makes some really great food! Working on projectors full time is like any other job you like, some days it's fun and others it is just work.
