Now that my new toy is tested and running, how should I hang the damn thing up? I've got unistrut mounts on the ceiling, but I need to hold the projector 8 or 9 inches down so I can get a reasonable throw angle (8' ceilings and an 84" screen with the bottom only a foot and a half from the floor).

I also need significant flexibility side-to-side, since the unistrut had to be mounted offset from the center of the room.

A fancy-pants mount is out of the question unless someone wants to give one away, so what's the best way to proceed? I've got a machine shop at my disposal, so cutting up tubing / unistrut, drilling holes etc, is easy - but I'd prefer to avoid having to do fancy milling or machining if I can avoid it.

Ideas?

PS: This is not socialist.

I have no suggestions as I like math, tools and factory "fancy-pants" mounts.
Just the look of uni-strut gives me gas. Laughing

Unitstrut is *perfect* for dropping it 8-9" and having side-to-side flexibility. Mount strut on the G70 at 90° to the strut on the ceiling. Use channel nuts in the top & bottom struts, connected by all-thread rod of the desired length. Slide the channel nuts side-to-side to get your desired location. See http://www.curtpalme.com/MountingMethods.shtm, with longer all-thread. Hopefully you don't have to mount it TOO far off-center or you'll end up with some significant torque on the ceiling strut.

Or am I missing something?

Gary I'm going to have to go with Chip on this one, all that strut and all-thread looks like the cats ass. Laughing
I had a mount here for dropping a G70 down, sold it to Rabies I think? It used a series of brackets and such to drop it and allow all kinds of adjustment. Sorry, no technical drawings.

based on your description, a small anti-gravity field directly below the G70 will do the trick. Laughing

Over the years I've inherited all sorts of mounts by Peerless and Chief, etc that had all sorts of extensions and adjustments to drop CRT projectors down from the ceiling, anywhere from 5" to 3'. They are all pretty darn heavy, so I've thrown a bunch out, but might have one or two left. That would allow you to mount a standard G70 mount to a telescoping pole style mount to lower it. I can check if you want, you can have the extension for free, it will need painting as it's been stored under my deck for at least 2 years, but will work.

Shipping could be $50-60 though to you in NYC.

My buddy and I dead-lifted mine onto the mount... It's really not that bad. 4 guys would make it total cake.

I hope this is the last time I have to say this but........Nothing looks slicker than a factory mount. You will never see all this threaded rod and uni-strut in a pro installation. To many here are looking for the "quick way" to get it hanging with enough play to dial it out later. With a little thought, you can put a factory mount up which WILL have some room for tweaking. As far as dropping the height, most factory mounts have bolt patterns machined into them for standard 2" pipe flanges to bolt to. You can buy 2" pre-cut pipe nipples in 1/2" length increments up to 12". So that gives you plenty to choose from.
As I no longer give a $hit, you can hang them from dental floss if you like Laughing

So where do you find these nifty slicker than sheep sh*t factory mounts?

They sure aren't for sale new anywhere, so make your own is the order of the day.

Heck if the where holding up an Ampro you'd never even see them under that sleek box the call an exterior anyway. Laughing

Not a few. Not even most. But EVERY friggin CRT projector ever built originally had a factory mount. (period)
So let me ask you this. How hard have you tried to find one?

Lets ask Curt or Tim if they might have a basic Marquee factory mount. I'll do it for you. Rolling Eyes

It took me a couple weeks but I found a PSS-70 (the part # for a factory g70 mount.
I forget what I paid but I know it was reasonable
and I love the mount, even though I had to spend some extra time mounting it square
it was worth it. I think the unistrut method would give you ALOT more adjustment
but I wouldnt trade my factory mount. Just my 2 cents.

It doesn't matter that every projector sold had a commercial mount since most of them get thrown away! I can count the number of times on one hand I've ever seen a complete commercial (factory or not) mount included with a projector in a surplus sale.

Even if it were, many of them were mounted in a conference room or classroom with a 24-36" drop and not exactly useful in a house, and the Sony mounts didn't use the threaded pipe method; they were welded steel tube in a couple of preselected drop lengths.

I'm just guessing, but I'd bet money there's less than one commercial CRT projector mount useable in a house for every ten usable CRT projectors still sitting around.

Besides, if a guy can put together a mount for nearly as little money in materials as it would cost just to ship a factory mount, then what do you care, Chip? I agree the Unistrut mount doesn't look great, but so what? It's not your room! In my case, I recessed my hand-fabricated 1.5" square-tube steel mount into the ceiling.

I think that is about the ratio I have experienced. I have had 9 Barcos and one Chief mount came with one of them. Really nice mount but I had gone with Unitstrut years ago and I wasn't going to redo everything. I ended up tossing it, I couldn't sell it and nobody wanted it for free. I did get half a Barco factory mount with one projector too but of course half doesn't usually help.

New , as in currently produced by the manufacturer using materials of virgin origin for consumers to purchase in abundant quantities.

None by Sony for absolutely sure. Wink

Two guys to place it on the scaffold in one piece or strip it down lift it up onto the platform then reassemble.

http://www.curtpalme.com/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=803

Using scaffold also helps make sure you have it optimized before attaching the bolts. I used a Hydraulic jack under one side to raise it the last inch or so then just bolted er' up.

Thanks to Mr. Green for the idea. Thumbs Up

I hung mine by myself. I dont recommend it because it took several hours but can be done. 1208 is 165lbs. I cover the unistrut in black material and the room is dark so you cant see the mount anyway.

Chip all the projectors had mounts but they were all additional options as I understand it or at least in most cases.
