Oh, I have an 83 that I'm getting rid of, and a region-free mod to go with it if anyone is interested.

Was the mod from Kentucky? Question

I don't get how those are going for $400+ when the new model is out for $500??

If I was going to spend $400 I would sure as hell just nut up and buy the new model.

Ha, no, I'd never let that crazy redneck get his hands on any piece of electronics I own. It's the one that was sold by CRT Projectors in the UK.

Probably because it's available now, vs the 93 which isn't out yet (excluding those who got the early release offer). But I can see where you're coming from - if you're willing to wait, yes it would be worth it to just get the 93.

It is true that those people selling old stock Oppo's are asking a crack rock price. Its all about the A (as in addiction).

Mine did ship today as planned. FedEx says I will have it Friday. Sweet!

Wan, if they are saying the 30th now, they must have sold a ton of pre-release units. Wonder why they called is a special pre-release sale if it wasn't so limited afterall?

Because it would make people jump and buy it.

I have had the BDP-93 here for several months as I have been testing it for Oppo. They player's firmware has progressed nicely over these past months.

At this point the BDP-93 works pretty well, but like when the 83 was released, the 93 is not yet perfect. The differences between the 83 and 93 that I see are mostly features versus refinement. The 83 loads fast and is solid on everything. The 93 boots more slowly from power on and can rarely still be quirky. I think the 93 will be another fantastic player after a couple months of refinement.

Thanks Craig. Have you tested the analog sound outputs?

I have not tested anything on my unit except HDMI.

Sorry.

Does the 83 play all the same digital formats? Mkv, mp4 etc? And does it have multi-channel analog outs? If so, I'm keen Smile

I'm sure the analog outs would sound great! I would not be worried about that...and it is definitely a nice feature to have. I think HDMI for multi-channel audio would not be as good as analog.

Upon what do you base that notion?

I'd suggest it depends on how good the D/A converters are in the BD player compared to those in the AVR/prepro, what sort of processing goes on in the digital vs. analog domains in the preamp/AVR, etc.

For instance, my prepro has 192Khz/24-bit Burr Brown DACs, so how would putting a couple of feet of analog cable between the Oppo and me prepro sound any better than sending the stream to the decoder via the HDMI cable?

In other words, whether the HDMI or analog would sound better, I think it depends...

dacs are not that big of a deal...they all SOUND the same. This has been tested and proven in double blind scenarios....

HDMI has inherent timing issues...and timing can have a real effect on the sound quality.

Bottom line, get the signal to analog as soon as possible...if you think a dac sounds better, you have to prove it in a double blind test.

Please. You're kind of making my point. All digital transports (HDMI or no) have inherent timing issues... with PCM. But, if I'm sending TrueHD or DTS-MA over HDMI, I don't have to worry about the timing issue... At least no any more than I need to worry about impedance mismatch, noise, or other anomalies introduced in the analog cabling.

You want to talk about double-blind... Set up three scenarios:
1) DTS-MA track from BD via HDMI to prepro with decoder and
2) Same DTS-MA track decoded to PCM and sent via HDMI to prepro, and
3) Same DTS-MA track decoded to analog to prepro via analog

Unless there was a deficiency or level mismatch somewhere, I'd bet money you wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I agree...we probably couldn't tell the difference. THat's why I think the analogs would sound great...

I've had my 93 for a few weeks now. Very nice machine. I've played with everything, even the Wireless N adaptor. Very solid in my opinion. I hooked it up via the analog outs as well as HDMI, and I can't tell the difference in sound, but then again I don't have really expensive speakers either. Just getting ready to test the NetFlix service, but I don't anticipate any issues.
