So I'm perusing the available torrents for a new Sci-Fi series to look into when I come across TWO new Star Trek series that I'd never heard of before.
Star Trek: New Voyages
and
Star Trek: Hidden Frontier
The catch is, these are not syndicate produced shows. They are fan based!
I'm not sure I'm really going to download any, but it's probably worth a look into (or not).

Btw, these aren't on TV, you can only download them. Internet based TV.

New Voyages definately has the mindshare among the fan based stuff.

I don't get it, what's a mirror? looks very complicated, like you need a software engineering degree to navigate the site.

NV does look like fun. Mebbe I'll try to download one of the episodes to see just how bad (or good?) it is.
Dragan, a mirror is only an alternative download site.

I hated Voyager almost as much as the "dumb generation" but enterprise was a good show. I wish they had avoided some of the "gimmicks" like time travel but I liked the characters and the epsiodes were fun to watch.

Dragan, the cowboy guy from Enterprise showed up briefly on Stargate SG1 recently. I agree about the cast from the show, with the exception of the british guy. Couldn't stand him!
derfla... let us know how it is!

The problem with fanfilms (in general) is that the acting is universally atrocious. It's so bad that I can't stand to watch even a few minutes, because I find myself embarrassed for the participants - fanfilm people usually put immense effort into doing professional-level visual effects, sets, costumes, and props - and then the producers, writers, and directors all insist on acting.
Even aside from the abysmal acting, I'm sorry, but my suspension of disbelief does not allow for a 300+lb 'security officer' who can't waddle across the bridge without stopping to catch his breath. There's a reason they have casting directors as well as special effects guys and directors, people - I don't care how much you wish you were William Shatner or Patrick Stewart, believe me when I tell you: You are not.
There are oodles of trained, in-shape, appropriate actors who would jump at the chance to be part of a well-done fan series, even without pay. Having the dumpy, age-inappropriate 'producer' play the young, dashing captain is nothing more than ego masturbation, and it murders otherwise promising productions.
Also, on-camera microphones. That sh*t pisses me off too.

How many episodes are you guys doing?
On a side note, my best friend is friends (kind of) with Gabe from the movie Trekkies. In the second movie, they introduce his wife. Fast forward to today and that same wife has left Gabe for a woman. Doh!!

Perisoft/akajester,
LoL, obviously you have been watching some of our "competitors" in the fan film market. I'd like to think that our acting has improved dramatically since our first outing. In addition, we go to great lengths to make sure that mics and equipment are not in shot. Heck, in BaF Part 1, David Gerrold had a cameo as "the dead captain" and wasn't dead enough (he breathed, and one of his arms moved slightly), so we went back in and rotoscoped the whole scene so that he seemed quite dead. Thus, the final version does not show him moving or breathing at all.
Also, we tend to select Starfleet personnel from people who "fit the mold" unlike some of our other fan film brethren.
As for the rest about STP2, Yes, I am biased... but that aside, we've been nominated for a Hugo (first fan film ever to be nominated), Nebula and Peabody - and won TV Guide's Best Online SciFi Webisode of 2007 (beat Battlestar Galactica and The 4400) - so I am not alone in thinking that we've come a long way with our episodes compared to other fan films.
So... please dont lump us in with the rest. We've got professionally written stories (David Gerrold, DC Fontana, Marc Zicree, Michael Reeves, Jon Povill, Dave Galanter, John Meridyth Lucas, H Weinstein... to name a few), sets built off the Paramount blueprints, and actors who are actually learning, being coached, and/or are actually pros.
Matter of fact, we just got licensed for Buck Rogers because of the improved quality of our episodes.
Spanky Ham:
As many as we can. We have 4 in post production, 3 more in pre-production. That alone will total 11 (we dont count the pilot.... what pilot? we never did one... yeah, that's it...). We are stepping up the production schedule as we can (within the contraints of our time and personal budgets).
Best,
Rob

Awww nuts! In MOV format. I refuse to contaminate this PC with Apple sauce.
What other players play MOV's?

MOV format? Interesting. Try VLC Player... it will play any format our Mirror Sites release the episodes in. Some of the mirror sites have it in DiVX or even WMV (yuk). The original releases I send out are in MP4 format - so on the mirror sites, those should be the best quality as they have not been re-transcoded down from the copies I send them (which I already transcode down from 720p).
Or try the Dragonfly link on the main page for streaming video - higher resolution than the mirror site copies - if you have the bandwidth AND low latency.
All except BaF Part 1 are on Dragonfly (select the "Playlist" button at the bottom of the player to change episodes).
Best,
Rob

"Contaminate" a PC with Apple software? That's funny, Jeremy... That's akin to worrying about contaminating an ugly working girl on a street corner in Bangkok by putting a nice dress on her. Good one, though.
I can see how you don't want to install QuickTime... After all, it's far superior to the train wreck POS that is WindowsMedia... But, hey - don't let that stop you from bad-mouthing Apple or enjoying better software. Does Microsoft pay you to be a shill for them?
That said, I don't know why these content producers don't distribute in mp4 w/H264 and AAC audio... That way, practically any recent hardware, OS, software application, or hardware device could play the file...

I do... our Mirror sites re-transcode it.

I saw where you referenced that - I wasn't referring to you. I should have said "those other" instead of "these".

I don't want to install QuickTime because it forces file associations and MIME types with everything under the sun, even when you explicitly tell it not to, and then fails to relinquish those associations even when you tell it to - thus making it impossible to click on a link to a TIFF and actually open the freaking thing in your browser. Want to click on an MP3 and have it load in WinAmp? No can do if you've installed QuickTime - even if you specifically told it to leave MP3 filetypes alone in the install! And it will CONTINUE to open MP3s in a QT window in the browser even after you go through and reset everything manually!
It also has the wonderful habit of asking if you'd like it to rape any associations it hasn't already gotten to, whenever you try to open any file that it HAS latched itself onto. You can check a box saying "Don't ask next time" ... after which.. it asks anyway! Forever! Until you acquiesce and let it take over the other associations too, of course.
QuickTime is the epitome of user-hostile daddy-knows-best software. Apple has some good products. QuickTime is not one of them, and it can bite my shiny metal ass.
