So I'm watching THE DARK KNIGHT and every once in awhile I see that the image has enlarged
off the top and bottom of the screen. Almost like it changed to 4:3 format from 16:9
Then it goes back again and its fine.
I havent seen this before.
Any ideas?

In the bluray version the opening sequence is in 16:9 then it goes to 2.35:1 then in the tunnel sequence it once again goes to the 16:9 format. They did this because those were the ones filmed specifically for I-max.

Yeah, and if you have your projector pretty dialed in, you can really see the sharper image and finer grain the 70mm IMAX print offers over the 35mm scope image.
Oh, and FYI, the aspect ratio is switching between 1.78:1 (16:9) and 2.40:1 (scope).

Funny - I aways thought the problem with Batman was the acting...or was it the nonsensical story....?

Transformers 2 has an imax version too. I love the 16x9 scenes!

Seriously? You can't be referring to Dark Knight? Dark Night was excellent in both regards!

Agreed. I was quite surprised - actually startled - at the difference. It really shows that the IMAX film equipment (film stock, camera, lenses, etc) can give you substantial increased sharpness (even at 1080p) over "regular" 35m film equipment.
