Is DIY with lumenlab stuff a good option or is trying to find a decent CRT machine the best way to get price/picture results?
Thx.

Are you serious? With the prices of CRTs these days, there is no comparison. I didn't even think people made those things anymore.

Apparently dudes r still building their own with sucsess even with native 1080p pixel massive LCDs pulled from monitors: http://lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showforum=3
But I figured it's likely that a good 9" CRT machine that can do 720p will blow those outta the water time/work/price/picture wise if the used market prices are low...
NEC, Barco...? Which make/model is a good value that will do one of the 16:9 ratio HD like 720p or 1080p with some decent lumens--I know the 1080p CRT variety is $$$ so which can do 720p for a decent price that you like?
Thanks!!!

Definitely CRT. I was going the lumenlab route and even partially put together a projector when I found this website 3 years ago. I never looked back

success? that's like knitting a sweater out of yarn spun from belly-button lint and calling it a successful clothing line

Thanks!!! | a 9 inch will do 1080P and if all you want is 720/1080i get yourself one of the marquee 8500 8 inch machines. Actually, they will also do 1080P quite nicely with upgrades.

Thanks drice n dragan! that is precisely the kind of answer I was lookin for from veterans who looked over the options... i'm tech but i'm not gonna crank up the DIY hardware and assemble a buch a shitake over 10 weekends unless it's gonna be miles beyond CRT in quality/price/picture... wtf r those lumenlab DIY dumasses thinking??? re-inventing the wheel... only reason I look at the option is that so many them fools is working the DIY dream over pages and pages of forum--so I says to myself there must be a reason for it and I should look into it... NOT. jus so they can say they created it themselves--look ma...
I have some common sense I should know better than to be lured into oblivion...
thanks for setting me straight!
So now on to which make/model will kill for the price and sync to 720p or even 1080p without killing the bank... what u guys vote for?

This guy did his lumenlab rig back in 06:
"Total build cost for this projector was :
15.4" Wuxga LCD - $250 --- Ebay
15.4" Controller - $375 --- Minoten
LL Light Kit - $180 --- LL
LL Pro lens kit - $260 ---- LL Have since switched to an 18"-$45
LL Pro Reflector $20 --- LL
Slusher Box - $110 --- Slusher
Fans - $40 --- Radio Shack
Misc parts - $100 --- Lowes
Total - $1335"
I bet it still costs bout the same to do it now not includin the time... only reason i can see they do DIY for is maybe cheap lamp replacement or long lamp life... but it don't look like such a substantial savings especially if you consider the time/work they dump into it...
I'm thinkin in the 8" Marquee 8500 sets now... about what $ will I find them for?

I went the lumenlab route for my first 2 projectors early last year. It was a fun project and definitively worth while. The one positive with the DIY projector is that it is very easy and cheap to repair or replace parts if anything breaks and the bulb life is amazing. However there are many cons...Brightness being the main issue, you'd be lucky to hit 300 lumens with most mh bulbs. If you buy parts used or through the forums you can build something relativity cheap (300-500 range) and you won't need to modify your house to mount it to the ceiling .
If you have kids and they are showing interest in anything tech related this may be a great project, however if you're looking for something bright, easy to focus, and plug and play I'd stay away from DIY.
Check out my 2 setups below:
Proj 1: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=27536
Proj 2: http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28064
I ended up paying around $500 for the 2nd one after selling the internals of the old projector case. After several months of listening to my wife and friends complain about the size of the projector I parted it back out for what I paid for it and wound up purchasing an Epson LCD.

Uhhh... Guys... That thread was from over FOUR YEARS ago. Summer 2006! New 1080p projectors just hit $1000 LAST FALL. In 2006 when this guy built his 1920x1200 projector, it was probably still a $5000 proposition to project 1080p. 1080p projectors hit $3000 or so in 2007. Hell, a nice clean 8" EM/LC CRT was probably still $2500+ in 2006!
It's also worth pointing out that you could build a full 1080p equivalent of what he built for several hundred less now. Of course, it still wouldn't make any sense. The LumenLab had its day, but there's just not much point anymore. There are plenty of 1080p projectors in the $1000-1300 ballpark now, so the only legitimate reason to DIY would be to learn, for fun, to say you did it, etc.

Shouldn't green be in the middle?
And yes you can get 1080p way cheap these days for projection, by far (IMO) CRT is THE best price/picture ratio out there, I dont care. If thats what matters are those 2 things then CRT is the ONLY option
I love my NEC XG, its HUGE, and has a picture to match its hefty weight and size
Anyone tries to disrespect CRT in this house they get their asses chewed out

An as-is surplus 8500 off e-bay that might need some some work is $200. A re-built one with warranty is more.
