http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/14/netflix-on-ps3-goes-disc-free-gets-1080i-streaming-and-5-1-surr/

Quote:
Rejoice, PS3 owners, your Netflix streaming experience just got vastly better than anything else on the market. Starting October 18 Netflix on the PS3 will no longer require a disc, and it'll stream some content with 1080i resolution and / or 5.1-channel surround audio, while everyone else will be stuck with a max of 720p stereo for the time being. Oh, and you'll get subtitles on some content as well. Netflix is partnering with Dolby on the audio side, and the surround format will be Dolby Digital Plus, which is the same codec used by the VUDU HDX streaming service -- we're guessing it'll require a tiny bit more bandwidth but the results should sound pretty great. Netflix says 5.1 will come to other platforms "over time," so we'll see how long that takes -- and given that the PS3 is now disc-free and the company's eschewed the SRS surround features baked into its Silverlight-based platform, we're guessing Microsoft's exclusivity period has now completely run its course. Video and PR after the break.

Whoo-hoo!!! Very cool! Can't wait to see and hear how this is going to look!

What's hilarious is after a year or two hiatus from Netflix, I just turned my service back on about two weeks ago, and JUST got the PS3 streaming disc in the mail YESTERDAY!!!

Netflix is kicking ass... I can't believe the value. For the $12.99 or whatever per month, I get one Blu-ray out, and I can stream to my PS3, iPhone, iPad, and the new AppleTV I don't have yet that's going in the bedroom.

How the hell can they even DO that!?!?! How much money are the studios getting from my $12.99/mo if I watch, let's 3 Blu-rays, and stream half a dozen movies and TV shows? How much must the bandwidth alone be costing Netflix?

Amazing.

That is a HELL of a good question. Doesn't make any sense to me either. Maybe they've reviewed their customer stats and decided the average usage is actually pretty low? (We know none of US are normal...) But if those stats are based on DVDs-in-the-mail, they may get a rude awakening when people discover the convenience of instant-downloaded movies.

Well, I was all excited to watch a movie streaming from Netflix, so tonight we picked out a movie that was tagged "HD" to watch... After a LONG delay, the movie started.

OMG, picture quality looked like ASS! It wasn't anywhere NEAR even DVD-quality and it had to stop and rebuffer for a few minutes about 15 minutes in. I'd say older YouTube (standard) quality was a fairly apt description. It got a little better at times, but in general it sucked ass.

We watched the movie, but after it was over I thought, "OK, there's no way in hell this is supposed to work like this." so I checked the internet when the movie was over, and this is what I got:

Hmmmm... I wonder if it could have anything to do with that??!??! Rolling Eyes

Pay for 20mbps, get 3.2. Awesome. Evil or Very Mad Thumbs Down

SC, out here in the sticks I get 0.5 mb/s
you think you got it rough.
The only other option is satelite which is VERY cost prohibitive.

P.S. I just wanted to give a personal Thank You for all your help on my G70.

Here's the result this morning... From my iPhone!

Might have to go back to Qwest DSL... I've heard the faster equipment has been rolls out in out in our area and the inconsistent performance of cable really sucks!

No problem, Jeff! Glad I could help a little. This forum rocks, doesn't it? Glad you're all up and running and happy with the results.

Cheers,

There must be a lot of people doing NetFilx streaming on Saturday night. My cable seemed doggy as hell too...I didn't run a speed test, next week I'll try to remember.

Frankly I was a bit surprised when you we so excited about NetFlix streaming, because your standards are what I consider very high, like mine. Was the sound lacking too? Keep in mine an uncompressed TrueHD, DTS-HD or PWM audio tracks alone are 4-5 GB on Blu-ray. It's likely the whole movie w/audio was much from NetFlix. Joe Six-packs standards are just not very high.

That's what I'm wondering. They just rolled out the new diskless streaming app... I'm going to try to get down there and give it a try maybe tonight or tomorrow night and see what it looks like on a week night.

Oh, I don't expect it to be anywhere near BD... I'm thinking something more along the lines of DirecTV or maybe not too far off OTA. BD will still be my primary source for movies; The Netflix streaming thing was just a neat way to catch up on some special interest, documentaries, a specific show of some kind, etc... You know, those times when you don't have a new movie on BD to watch, and you don't want to just "watch TV". Plus, it will be super-handy for kids - especially on all the different devices - if it works.

Oh, on the audio... it was a 2006 lower-budget urban drama - The Architect. So, I have no idea whether the audio was any good to begin with. Frankly, the picture was so pathetic, I didn't really care about the audio. Like I said, it looked like an early-1990's bad DVD or something. The compression artifacting went away after the first re-buffering episode 10 or 15 minutes in, so then it just looked like an old, soft DVD.

But, again... I can't blame Netflix if my cable internet connection was crap.

And think... if the phone companies get their way, they can charge you more for the high speed internet.... then continue to under deliver on bandwidth at peak hours!!!

Aint the free market GREAT!!!!

Thumbs Up

Don't start, John. If it weren't for the free market and profit motive, we wouldn't even HAVE high speed internet. We all know the free market has its pluses and minuses.

Bandwidth is not an unlimited resource... It costs money to provide.

Friends don't let friends do streaming content.

I have zero hope for any streaming service to ever be up to the quality we'd expect on our setups. Some of you may say you're not fussy, but the fact that you're reading my post here means that you're probably in the 1% of people who want something better. Yes, one day streaming may do high enough bitrate to be indistinguishable from Blu-ray, but at that point we'd probably be playing 4K discs.

When bandwidth costs money, content providers will always play the 80:20 rule and give enough to maximize profits and minimize quality since 80% of the people don't notice the difference/don't care.

Streaming Netflix accounts for 20% of all internet traffic in the US at peak usage!!!

Holy sh*t, Greg! That's unbelievable! I can't even comprehend what their bandwidth bill must look like. This further blows my mind on how their business model even works!?!? It's like they're subsidized somehow!
