Any thoughts on the root cause? The IC going bad just by itself over time, or something else in the system damaging it?

I'm thinking of maybe swapping the projectors and putting my tubes in the new one.

Or down. It all depends on how you look at it.

The way I see it, you got a free projector along with a set of lenses you were looking for Thumbs Up

I think it's typical of stuff that is overly complex, that hasn't properly been Beta tested, and not enough were built to get the flaws out.

Look at audiophile amps that get connected to esoteric speaker cables that then oscillate and take out tweeters. Had that happen to a local guy with $140k Wilson speakers. He went through about 8 tweeters before KBK (of avs and Screengoo fame) figured it out for him.

Ditto for (dare I say it)... HDMI. THe end users were the Beta testers.

The only reason the MArquees and BArcos are so stable is because the platform didn't change for 10+ years, but the original 9000 and 8000 had the bugs. Ditto for the BG800 series..

Curt, Thank you for the effort. It does add another chip to the not available new list. I feel fortunate also to have found a used G90 and will have it at the end of next week.
Craig offered to fix the YA board. 200+ pins on the chip sounds like an intricate soldering challenge. With finding the parts G90 I am going to hold off spending more money right now in getting my YA board fixed.
That is strange Kris and I had the same issue at about the same time, when it wasn't seen before.
I'll keep the thread posted.

Also, if anyone with this problem is willing to donate their YA to me I would appreciate it. So far this is just a theory and until I try to repair one of these we won't know for sure.

Thanks

Did you try killing power to the chip or disconnecting the outputs to see if the anomaly changes?

Curt did some testing.

I personally have never had one of these defective boards in hand.

Were there ever any firmware up-grades for the G-90? I think there was for the G-70 but I'm just not that up on Sony crap.

Yes, there was a firmware v1.11 released in 1999. My projector came with v1.10 when I got it and I did the update to 1.11 a few years ago.

I wonder what would happen if you tried to re-load the firmware?

I'll try re-loading the firmware once both projectors are back together. Over the weekend I took both apart and rebuilt one out of the best parts from the pair.

Sounds like a plan. However, be careful with mixing and matching parts on G90's. Read through the service manual to make sure any parts you swap do not need to be calibrated to the given projector. Lots of boards require setup including the PE and BA boards among others.

I looked at your FB photos and just want to point out that you should keep the magnetics with the given projector. Ie if you swap tubes, keep the original magnetics with the original projector. Otherwise you will have to calibrate the width coil adjustments.
