when i run the s/w in XP (just to get screen sizes and dimesions and so on) i have to run it in win98 compat mode. (ie: Run As ...) i've never played with the serial connection, but that may help.

the software runs in xp in just doesnt see the projector. So it may need win 98 or 95 to run as it is 16 bit program I think.

1) Make sure you are plugged into the OPTION connector (not REMOTE1) on the projector,
2) If you have never used PC control on this projector before you may need to change the communication to RS-232. There is a switch on the SYSTEM board (might be S8121) that switches between RS232 and RS422.
I use the software on XP with no special settings for 98 compatibility. The only issue I have ever had is that I get some error messages if I try to save D-Conv settings.

I am using the option connector. If anyone knows about a switch on the board for rs232 or rs422 please tell.

As I said above, there is a slide switch on the system board that selects the communication mode.
Look into the card cage (remove the perforated cover) on the component side of the system board. You will see a black lever for the slide switch approximately in the center of the board. Make sure that the switch is pushed toward the center of the projector (not toward the side wall) for RS-232 mode.
Or carefully remove the two cables and pull the System board out if you want to see exactly what you are doing. I guess the slide switch is labeled S121.

It is in the center position.
Could it be I am using a laptop with a usb to serial converter?
I use the serial converter for everything else and it works fine(gps, digital projector, extron switch).

Just to be clear, by "center position" you mean that the switch is pushed fully toward the center of the projector, right? The switch has only two positions, and it should be fully LEFT if you are facing the rear of the projector in a desktop configuration.
That's a good point-the USB/serial adapter might be an issue with the older software. Some older devices are picky about the adapter's chipset. I'm using the software on a laptop with a serial port, so I can't say.
I assume you've tried changing COM ports and confirmed all the settings.
Oh, and the projector must be in STANDBY or ON to communicate with the PC.
Good luck.

yeah you are correct it is left when viewed from the rear in a desktop config.
What settings for the com port do you use?

My serial port is COM 1, so I have the control software configured to that.

I got it working the usb serial device was te fault. I hauled my pc down stairs and I am using win 7 64 bit ultimate. So I installed microsofts virtual pc and winxp for win7 and then installed the xg pc software. I only had to click use real serial port in options of the virtual machine and bam first try I got my system grd file. I am going to play with it once I get the crt installed. So far so good. Hopefullly this may help others trying to get it to work.
