If you would like to really get into how the Marquee Control Module works the Electrohome specification digs right into the guts of the board. There are 53 pages dealing with the control module and another section that deals with the deflection processor. I'll post the many pages of the documents as long as there is interest in them. These start off kinda general but get into the really gory details after the introductions.

I'm trying to completely turn off the internal generator when not in use.

This certainly describes the hardware that generates the internal video. The firmware that controls it is another matter.
