........about owning a CRT.
A certain owner of a very popular Home Theater forum, who owns a very nice customized 9500LC and is moving has decided that he is going to hang the 9500 in his new home.
Mind you this person could have just about (and has seen) any digital projector he wants. But has decided to use his 9500LC.
Says there is to much "noise" for him in the blacks on the digitals.
Who says CRT is dead......

Terry

Edit.....I see this is old news and there is a thread on the CRT section of AVS.

Good for him! Thumbs Up Digital still just doesnt have the smoothness of a CRT either, I don't care, I have seen many expensive digitals and they just dont compare!

Go CRT FTW!!! xD

Yep!! He and I have talked a few times on the Phone when he lived here in western NY. last year he had the first of the dark 4 chip digitals, the high end ones that was just shy of 47k. he said his 9500LC was better in every aspect where it came to having a true film like experience. He PM'd me just a few weeks ago looking for a new 9500LC but I think he got his old one back. Did he get a hold of you Terry to install it?

over the last few months I've had 3 owners of high end HT shops hire me to re-furb their high end re-badged 9500LC's (LC chambers + mods). 2 of these were for personal use. I'm sure these guy have seen or had access to the best new stuff out there but stuck with their CRT's. Thank goodness for Nash's bellows and for the occasional batch of Red C-elements to make this happen. Thumbs Up

How did he manage to buy his machine back? He sold it for a bargain price, and I don't believe the buyer was in New York.

Anyway, After my calibration class Friday, besides the SpectraCal instructor, no one else in the room (all HT installers and one commercial installer) seemed to be CRT fans and were all giving me looks like I was a lepper for still having a CRT projector. THey were all oogling over the Runco digital we were playing with. SOme I could tell have never seen a CRT, so that could be why. Maybe it's because they are low tier HT guys, not sure, but I didn't a warm fuzzy other than I know my picture blew away the Runco.

Yeah! This did make me feel good so I'm going to chime in......something I rarely do considering I read the forum every day......hell .....I may even post some picture of my HT I finished in March of this year in the Construction Forum.

I went from a ECP 3101 to a 4500 to a digital Infocus 4805 to a re-tubed 8500 The digital was a huge mistake! I'm so happy with my 8500 in my newly construct HT. I wish I never wasted money on that crappy digital PJ. Last week the wife and I went to the movies to see Grown Ups which was a rare trip us and it will most likely be the last in a long time. SHE was not happy with the quality of the picture! I couldn't believe it! She swears the 8500 puts out a better image that the local AMC theater. I knew I married this girl for a reason!

I have had a few of my buddies over who instantly identified the "three eyed monster" with old 1980's projection TV's. I have had plenty comments along the lines of "what are you doing with that old piece of crap!" Regardless of first impressions every single person who has visited has had their jaw on the floor once the lights go down and the image pops up!

I'm sticking with CRT for as long a there are parts to keep them going. The next house will have a 9500LC. (already wife approved Smile )

He did sell it but offered the buyer a refund. I do not think he ever shipped it. I think the buyer was closer to FL so he was going to ship it from there as he took it with him during the move.

Paul, if those guys ever came into a CRT theater blind folded and the PJ was hidden and you told them it was the latest Digital i bet they'd all get googley eyed and be in awe of the blacks. Then if you told them it was a CRT doing 1080p@72 Hz they'd doubt you and begin to point out imaginary flaws. Its not worth it, lets keep CR's our secrete Wink

Yes he still has the one that Galen built for him which is a very nice 9500LC with all the bells and whistles. Managed to get out of the deal he had to sell it.
Yes he did contact me about installing.

Awesome, I wish I would have went up to Rochester to see it when he lived there.

Maybe I have an excuse to go to FL now Wink

yeah, it's a nice machine. I was very close to picking it up before Terry made it affordable for me to upgrade my 8500. LUGs, frankenyokes, and noise mods just to name a few enhancements it has. I think I was too slow to respond, so he moved to the next in line. I can't believe it was never delivered. That was months ago. Good for him though. I was wondering if he knew something the rest of us didn't fire selling his 9500 like that for a digital.

I agree with the first part, but when you have a kid in college carry and ex-wife on your back like a lamprey, it's hard to be able to afford the really nice stuff.

Though the wide gamut on the LED projectors made him see shades he had never seen on any other digital projector, nor his CRT, and on his 35 MM film projector only to an extend, even on black and white movies.
