Great review! but WTH? no volume control? I wouldn't mind DVD menus for chapters but not having it isn't a dealbreaker.. not sure how this would work for episodic discs unless I broke them up.

You're kidding about the volume control, I assume...
As for the DVD nav issue, from the sounds of Wombat's post a few posts back, that seems to be resolved (or soon will be)...

I think the volume comes from someone comparing this to an HTPC. I use the volume in W7 all the time.
It is nice for living rooms that don't have universal remotes.
Although for the theater that feature is a non-issue.

Any updates on usability Adam?
I have relocated the Xbox from DVD duty in my daughters room because we got a Kinect for Christmas...now she wants to watch movies in her room again.
I was thinking that I would rather make ISOs of her crappy kids DVDs so she doesnt ruin them in one week and just either stream them or put them on 1 TB drive on her dresser with a WDTV Live Plus (for netflix).
I also saw that Seagate has their little Theater+ streamer which includes Netflix (basic form) for only $49!
Just wondering if they are actually usable over longer review periods.
Thanks!

I downloaded all of the files I needed for Mikes Another EAC3to GUI Plus this week. I am working through the process to get this functional. Hopefully I can test on the wd box and should have some updates this weekend.
Like I told Mike I am on a warpath to try and get some projects finished this is one of them.
I haven't been working on this because I really couldn't until it got cold. With the holidays I was too busy, but have time now. I need 3 more of me with less A.D.D.

Awww man...I gave you 4 months!
j/k I know how it goes. Let me know whenever you get around to playing with it some more.
I would be curious on your opinion for using this in a kids room.

I've had an ASUS O!Play (that is connected to my server) setup in our kids playroom for about 9 months and it has worked great for them. Before this there were always DVD cases (and often DVDs) strewn across the floor, and now it's just Wii games & cases all over the floor

Well...there is a solution for that as well!
Thanks for the review.

One of the wdtvs that I picked up is intended for the kids room. Just like Bucketfoot we have dvds all over the place. Plus on a 2 terabyte drive you can have all of the kids dvds. I am handing over the remote to my 6 year old daughter tonight to get her input. I don't see her having any problems using it.
I also just tried the "DESPICABLE ME" that I ripped last night. I still don't have the rip process down, as I have video but no audio. I still watched some of the video, looked very good. As soon as I can get the hang of using the software I am sure that this will be a very good option to the popcornhour player.

Yeah, my buddy has the hack on his Wii and has 50 or 60 games loaded on it... No discs or cases anywhere!
I'll be interested in hearing how this goes, too... I still want a network media player, but just can't pull the trigger on anything... For one thing, I just can't decide where I want to store everything. But over Christmas, I did run across the Verbatim MediaShare that looks exactly like what I want!
http://www.verbatim.com/prod/hard-drives/home-network-drives/mediashare-sku-97159
Not only does it do all the usual media tank stuff, but it has some neat online connectivity features, a nice backup utility (connect external drive and backup to it), and in addition to DLNA, it will act as an iTunes server. It was on sale for $120 last week on Buy.com, but I decided to wait awhile because I don't have time to mess with it right now$150 on Amazon. I'm thinking MediaShare in the telcom "closet", and WDTV HD to connect to it.
