So here's a thought that is partially at least) thought out. Wink

There was a thread here somewhere about a Marquee 9500 I sold with a new LUG tube in it that had poor focus when the customer got it. I ended up sending him an original LJE tube, the LUG should be on the way back. My thought at first was that it was a bad tube, as it seemed to be OK here, I'll check that out when I get it back.

The tube was brand new, it came from the batch that Terry sold here a few weeks ago, and I emailed terry, and he said he tested them all before sending them out.

I since have installed the second LUG green into a G90 with zero issues. I potted the third and final LUG green into a MArquee housing, and put it into another Ultra here, and was rewarded with poor focus, very much like my customer posted here. Good focus at low contrast, blooming and defocusing at 60-70+ contrast. I did swap out the focus yoke, no change.

So it got me to thinking: The Marquee focus coil is smaller somewhat than the Barcos or Sonys, thus the 'frankenyoke' mods to the Marquee. Is it possible that the Marquee stock focus yoke is simply too weak to work with the LUG?

I will add to this post on Friday, as I am currently sealing the LUG tube in another G90 housing. I took it out of the MArquee housing, and am about to put it into a G90, once the silicone cures. I will then find out if I have bad tubes (doubtful), or whether LUGs and MArquees simply aren't a good combination at 'normal (60ish) brightness and contrast settings.

I don't think I've had any other 9500 series with a LUG in it...anyone?

i have a pt22 and i think it has somewhat the same gun aperture as a lug and i do not have any issues with the thomson stock yokes.
perhaps lowering your g2 setting for the lug might help.

edit just looked at my drive and g2 and i have 90 for drive and 59 for g2 with the pt22.
try 40 to 45 for the lug.

I don't think you theory is sound Curt. One reason is VDC sells marquee's with LUG's and have an actual LUG specific VNB part number.

I bought a red LUG that is a stock part from VDC, Nathan told me I'd need either the Stock VDC VNB for the LUG or modify a VNB for LCP tube( pin 6 G2).

Thanks Athan, I know about the mod, and yes, have seen neck boards come in for repair from fliight simulators that were moded right from VDC, I just haven't seen how they perform. I've worked with lots of LUGs in BArco 1209 and 909, and I see no blooming, which led me to believe that maybe the LUGs just didn't like the Marquees.

AS I said, I know what the LUG in the (now G90) housing looked like in a Marquee. I'll find out Friday how it performs in the G90 when I install it.

I wish I had a spare VNB to mod for the LUG i have here. This LUG has full magnetics from VDC. I want to save the extra VNB's for my Thomas tube mods. I wonder if they have a special focus coil for LUG's? If I have time i should dig out the LUG and see what the focus coil part number is. But i doubt it is any different.

Athan, I think you might find the same problem with the Thomas's in the Marquee. Even with the goon coils on the 4600HD, I get some blooming at higher contrast that I never got before.

I haven't tested every Marquee I've ever had for this. But I don't remember ever seeing a stock electronics/magnetics Marquee that didn't bloom above 60 contrast with G2 in the 50's.
And that's with stock 8" 180's and 9" LCP's.

After I put the V2 mods from Mike Parker on my modded 9500LC Ultra a few years ago, I was able to get contrast MUCH higher than normal without blooming. I didn't keep it that way of course. But it was one of the tests I did.

I know my current 8500 does it, regardless of what stock 8500 focus board I use in it.

Chip, the thing with the Thomas tubes I noticed is they are brighter at the same contrast level, so yes they might bloom above 60 but that is like 65-70 if it were an LCP . Wink

Blooming on my 9500 that has stock CRT's starts above 90 contrast. and that's even with test patterns..Shocked

It's about the same on Williams Blended 9500's that also has stock tubes.

Ive not played with LUG's in a Marquee, So I have nothing to share on that topic.

I'll be able to tell you this weekend how Terry's tubes perform in my machine. They aren't LUGS, but LPBs, so not sure my data point will tell you much, even though they should act just like LUGS in a Marquee.

Curt - on the tubes you are having difficulty getting good focus -
are you certain you are using the correct 9" focus coils? ( P/N 9251.24 )

OK, update. I took the one LUG tube that had absolutely horrible focusing in a Marquee, and put it into a G90. Zero problems. Focus is perfect at all contrast and brightness levels.

I am still waiting for the remaining LUG tube in a Marquee housing to come back to me, so I can play with Marquee and Barco focus magnets, but right now I'm sticking to my guns (pun intended), that without a stronger/larger focus magnet on the neck of a stock 9500, you'll get either poor focus or blooming of the focus at above 60-65 contrast. Others have stated in this thread that LUGs defocus at high contrast. I've indeed seen that before with a LUG in a Marquee, but now that I've put one into a Sony, I get perfect focusing at 100% contrast.

Curt i do Remeber someone doing this mod for his Marquee and he needed a resistor from pin 7 to ground. there was a thread on your site about it and here is the quote from the link Tom posted above.

I know how you guys feel about Greg, but he does know some things Wink

Greg wrote:
P19lug has an extra gird. You need to tie this to the current grid or use a 1 Meg ohm resistor to GND.

IF you do not do this you will get a week focus.

Greg

Why not give it a quick try, I bet it works. It is hard to search for the thread on your site, But i remember reading it.
But I think they said you can just connect it to ground with no resistor as well.

I did that, and sent the modded neck board to the customer with the Ultra with the LUG. NO difference. I've never personally had any issue with Greg, I'm not trying to slam him or anything, I'm just reporting on what I'm seeing here.

Once I get the other LUG in, I'll definitely play with it for a day, and will take pix and will report more.

BTW, there is sometimes massive misinformation out there. I had a Runco 1101 that I sold. It's a Barco D1209s in disguise. I had it running 1080p here with zero issues. the customer had image wraparound on each side at 1080p. Greg and MadMrH (Andy) were troubleshooting with me, Greg said that the set needed the high frequency yoke board, a different HDM, blah blah.

Andy finally said, 'oh, the 1101 can't do 1080p', and cc'ed the customer. This went on for 2 months, customer is pissed, and in the end I took the set back along with all the boards I sent. I was really puzzled, because 1080p worked fine here.

In the end, it turned out that the customer didn't play with the porch settings to get rid of the image wraparound on his unit, and I believe he was using a Fury1, which I'd asked him to change. at the time I was using an external Moome box which had no wraparound issues.

Before I resold the set locally, I played for 2 days with the yoke boards and the HDM, and changing them to G1209s boards did absolutely nothing.

So, I confirmed that I was right, even though 2 other well known techs told me I sold the customer crap. It didn't help that Gary M somehow got into the loop, and sent me a bunch of snarky emails telling me I was an idiot. Smile
