I honestly don't remember if we tried any "star on black background" or "white titles" tests. I remember we tried some dark material and there were bright spots in the image -- like LOTR going through Moria in the dark, with Gandalf's staff giving a little pool of light.
We had them both hooked up and A-B'd between them numerous times. It took a few seconds to switch from one to the other but not enough to be significant.

Hmmm... That surprises me. When I switched from the 12xx to the G70, the difference was massive. Night/day. The halos on the 12xx looked absolutely horrible once I saw how awesome the G70 was. The 12xx had HD-8's on it so there shouldn't be anything too different optically. I wonder why you didn't see the differences as starkly as did I...

The 8500 does definitely have noticeable halos, but there are so few times it's really visible that it doesn't bother me at all.
Maybe the HD8's are worse for that? My 8500 has color-filtered HD145's.

Yeah, maybe HD145's are better... It smacked me in the face during every single opening credit and credit sequence with white on black lettering, and it drove me crazy. Couldn't believe they were (practically) completely gone when I went to LC... It was like, "Aaaahhhhh... That's what the white on black typography is supposed to look like!"

It's not the Halos, it's the HAZE.
AC projectors have this horrid haze across the image ALL THE TIME. Halos is just once manifestation of the light spill.
An LC projector is much clearer on 90% of images - it has more POP. This is ANSI contrast.
I would go the G70 over an 1100 any day.
Honestly, an AC projector is fit for recycling these days. It's only value is the bare tubes to fit to an LC chassis.
If you want to stay NEC, get an 1101LC. MUCH BETTER than an 1100. Better than a G70 IMO (no AKB line), but now you are splitting hairs.
And yes, I've had 144 and 145 lenses - many sets . They are very sharp, but they all have the haze.
Go LC or digital (I've had about 8 NECs so far, 6 AC, 2 LC).

I just had a G70 in my theater....loud. I now have an XGLC in there, not that loud...I got it from ken and he did some simple resistor mod to a few of the fans...it's way quiter than the G70. It will end up in a hush box with hot air exhaust...likely until it dies!!
I just had a PG in there too...and the LC projectors are significantly better in almost all scenes. Especially with massive blue defocus

My XG is basically silent.
Hushbox+fan extraction direct through chassis + fan mod.
It can be done, but it is a lot of work.

Not that I really know, but it seems that maxing out the raster, and running higher resolutions and refresh rates than these PJs were really intended to run, would make the STK chips as well as other components run hotter than normal. Thus I wouldn't think fan mods that reduce the amount of air flowing thru a PJ would be a very good idea.

I didn't get to A/B them like Gary, but I found the difference between AC and LC pretty noticeable. That was with 145 lenses on my NEC.

Due to the added extraction through the chassis, I have more airflow than before. My projector runs cooler (measured).
But really, at this point, who cares? Run it till it dies and get another chassis. It's not a $10,000 Barco 909 from Curt (market value $3k). It's a sub $1k projector at this point.

Ok, it is time!
I finally have the Moniez together to get my projector. In the end I have decided to go with the XG1100 based upon its physical condition, picture quality, and tube quality, and distance from my house.
If I decide to go sony I'll be going for the G90, for now and some time to come the XG1100 will suit my needs more than sufficiently.
All thats to be done is get the moome HDMI card (Hopefully will be able to find one by the time I can afford it :p ) for the XG and I'll be set!
Thank you to all of you for your opinions and comments, I appriciate them

The Moome card is worth twice what the 1100 is worth.
Unless the XG is $100, I think you are making a mistake.

I think as it was discussed in the CRT pricing of 1997 that the value of a projector is to the person buying it,
I am looking at justifying the cost of the projector based on what I am getting on the screen over what a digital will give me in the same price range (and I have a digital in the same price range as the XG)
where am I going to get a digital HD projector that has the same quality under the $1k mark (and no i didnt pay $1000 for it either)

I just can't imagine going through all that effort to mount it on the ceiling and set it up, for an AC projector.
But you seem set on the 1100 - good luck with it. If you need help, just ask.

I can't imagine why I wouldn't be happy to mount it to the ceiling...
1080p
brilliant color vs digital
$500
where do I find a digital 1080p projector with the image quality of a CRT for that price??? and how long will it last me before I need to replace something that costs more than half the projector itself?
so its air coupled and there is an ever so slight haze when the credits show, I noticed it, but its so minimal that having a LC'd machine wouldn't make a bit of difference to me.
I was able to see the XG1101 in action today when I picked my Xg1100 up, and honestly the difference is so minor its not even something that would concern me. Perhaps in other CRT projectors its quite noticable... but the difference wasn't there for me to go "Its LC or nothing" I guess I'm just not as picky...

I disagree, obviously.
My 1101LC is a huge step up from my 751 stock. If you watch for 10 mins it should stand out like the dog's proverbials.
The haze is there ALL THE TIME.

I never said it wasn't there, I just said that to me its not a huge significant difference that I would just not go with AC at all, but then im not spending 10 minutes TRYING to find problems with my picture quality, when it already blows away any projector I have had in my home
