On the local craigslist for $275. I remember drooling over the SDA-SRS' when we were in high school in the late eighties. Anybody know what these are? Monitor 11s? 12s? Any good any more?

They look rough. I'd have to clean them up. Probably not worth the effort even at well under asking price. Thoughts?

They're not monitor 12s. I had a set of those once. Very good for classical music.

Yeah, the sound those should put out should be well worth the price. I'd say they're a bargain that needs sprucing up.

Check for foam rot, but I think they used rubber, so they should be fine. Simple fix even if it's rotted. offer $200. Smile

Wah wah wah.... Good one, Ron!

Thanks, Greg. Yay! Another forum to waste time lurking in!

I probably won't bother with these "po Polks"... I don't need any new projects. I was hoping nobody said, "OMG, those are Monitor XX's! Those are worth like $500 if they're cleaned up!", but I was going to snag 'em if they did. But, I really want to build new subs before I do anything else. New subs are still at the top of the list.

So, I ran across this at Greg's Audiokarma forum link... Has anybody heard these new Polks?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290208

Monitor70... Four 6.5" mid and mid-bass drivers, and only $250/ea. They have a nice matching center for $179.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882290212

I'm sure they're nothing too amazing, but for that price, I'd almost be willing to sell my M&K's and put the difference into the subs. I really like my M&K's, but with two 5.25" drivers, they've always sounded a little "small"... Especially the center channel - I've never been happy with the vocals. Treating my room made it even worse. Intelligibility is pretty good - it just sounds "thin".

Anybody heard these things?

I have never heard any Polk speakers that I am aware of, but I agree that the center channel is the most important speaker. Don't they sell Polk at American? That would take you...what...1 minute to go listen to? Wink

They may not have those versions but similar series hopefully.

What frequency are you crossing over at? 80 Hz? 100 Hz?

I am partial to DIY at the moment and there are a hundred great designs to pick from.

There are some great "budget" builds that all sound great and only look as good as the time you spend on the finish (not much in my case since sound is all that realllllly matters).

Building speakers isn't much different than building subs...just have to either buy a crossover or solder one up...I did it so I am sure you can easily.

Before I decided to DIY I was contemplating the small horns from HSU...the HB-1 and the HC-1...they weren't that much for some nice finishes and HSU has pretty rave reviews on the forums. Small...economical...loud...all seemed to be good things.

I'd love to try DIY, Greg... And I'd be pretty cool with a finish no better than a matte black roller job (that would IMHO look pretty good even with the lights on in MY dimly-lit theater)...

The only thing that scares me is dropping a bunch of money on all the components, then spending several weekends in the garage working on it, only to end up not liking the results. What do you do with everything? Sell the parts and throw the rest in the trash, I suppose.

If I could go hear a set of LCRs that cost $350 in parts, and I could verify that I liked the sound, then I'd have no qualms about moving ahead. I have no doubt that for <$500, you can build a set of speakers that sounds as good or better than a commercial set costing 2-3 times that price. But, it still concerns me. Then, there's the time... I can just see my wife's facial expression if I told her I was going to spend a few weekends in the garage building speakers... What did yours say? Wink

Subs seem so low risk and hard to screw up... Use an existing design, here's the LF rolloff, here's the size of the enclosure, here's the plate amp you use for X performance, cut out six pieces of MDF and bada bing. Sub!

I think it might be all the cutting and woodwork that turns me off the idea the most. I bet if I could give eD a CAD file and go pick up all the pieces of MDF a week or two later, I could get it into it. Might have to look into the DIY designs some more. That might be a fun October/November project before it gets too cold to work in the garage. Heck, I bet if I sold all the M&K's, I bet I could build all new speakers AND subs and still end up ahead.

The HSU's look interesting, too... Thanks - I'll check 'em out!

I don't think you have the space available but just to give you an idea...the Standard version of the eWave like mine cost about $190 per speaker excluding labor and misc glue, fasteners, binding posts, etc.

Also...I wouldn't let the cabinet draw you away...Parts Express has tons of pre-made or at least pre-cut cabinets that aren't that bad in price and look pretty good. Or you can do like I did and convince a buddy at work that there is a big market for people who want to do DIY but don't want to build the cabinets and let "him" come up with the idea to practice building cabinets on your set!
