and search for LM2202. Check out how the contrast and drive circuits work. Neat idea. An analog multiplier like AD835 would work, too. Not cheap, though.

Scott,
Yes I have seen the LM2202 and similar IC's. Heck, when I had the money to design my own and have it fabricated it would be really simple. But making a three channel wideband attenuator with discrete components is a b*tch.
As you mentioned analog multipliers work as well, but as you mentioned as well they are expensive and I am not so sure they track that well across three channels.
