I know that ati does one thing and nvidia does the other...etc.etc...

can I get all of the following??

custom resolutions (2.35:1)
custom refresh (47.952)
gamma
reclock support
hdmi lossless or analog lossless (I don't think I care which) although, perhaps analog would be better if combined with reclock?

in the future, I'd consider Blu-Ray support, but it seems to be an utter pain in the ass anyhow...not my #1 priority.

4000 series ati cards like the hd4890 are supported in powerstrip to set custom resolutions.
total media theatre plays blu ray rips from a hard drive without any problems.
get a dual core with 2000mb internal memory a big case and plenty of hard disk space.
for the videocard i would get 1 with hdmi out and dvi out.
i prefer the digital out from my videocard compared to the rgbhv out (dvi-i --> vga --> rgbhv)but its up to you to decide.

so the must here is an ati 4000 series card?

Do these cards output lpcm over hdmi?

Is lpcm over hdmi better if using reclock?

sound isnt transported via the videocard to the best of my knowledge but i am not 100 % sure.
it doesnt have to be an ati but i have one and it has been working perfect with powerstrip.

I believe you need at least a 5xxx series ati card to bitstream audio over hdmi.

Powerstrip does not work with a 5xxx card.

And the AMD drivers do not have a custom res tool, like Nvidia does.

I just bought a 4850. But I probably should have got an Nvidia GT 250. (I don't use HDMI though.)

1. Not necessarily, but a 4xxx card is best if you want AMD and Powerstrip.

2. Yes 24 bit 7.1 channel LPCM. But maybe not bitstream.

3. Yes. Smoother playback, sound is still original quality.

I suppose I should have just pm'd you Smile

Ok...so, if I want reclock, it has to be ati?

If I want lpcm over hdmi, it would be ati 5xxx series? But then that series doesn't support powerstip, is that right?

Typical htpc scenario where I just can't quite get what I want.

I suppose analog out would be fine then...would most onboard analog perfomance be good?

Why do you think you should have got an Nvidia card? Does it work well with reclock?

No. Reclock works fine with Nvidia.

No. If you want BITSTREAM over HMDI it has to be 5xxx (I'm not sure about latest Nvidia cards). Bitstream is a bad idea IMO. Reclock->LPCM would be the go.

No. Mobo sound sucks.

Because it has custom res's in the drivers.

I was under the impression the 4xxx series ati didn't do LPCM over hdmi...or maybe it's just that none of the motherboards that integrate 4xxx allow lpcm over hdmi. I guess that's the glitch.

WOuld nvidia allow me a proper 47.952 synched with reclock?

If so, I should consider an integrated Nvidia motherboard that supports lpcm over hdmi....perhaps that's where I should be looking.

I was also under the impression that nvidia wasn't as precise with timings as ATI w/powerstip.

Yes. Nvidia seems to have added a 3rd decimal place lately.

Very interesting...it now seems that with lpcm over hdmi, nvidia could be my best option for a minimalist build.

does nvidia allow custom gamma curves with mkv's?

Or can I load a lut file that works with mkv's?

Don't know about lut files, but last time I tried to do custom gamma on an Nvidia card, it worked with their built in gamma correction scheme, even with blu ray playback...But I can't guarantee it works with mkv playback...gimme a couple days to check...

The absolute killer is getting it to work with reclock...at least, it is for me.

I want 47.952 Hz progressive refresh...no stuttering!

Everything I heard over the years told me that Nvidia wasn't the solution for this...do we have people on here using reclock and nvidia?
