So I see you have a de-potted HVPS on your bench huh Mac!!! Seeing if you can rebuild the blown HV sections are you?!?!

Yeah, I had one sent to me a while back that supposedly had a problem in the potted section, which is did. Figured I open it up now so I could map out all the PS so I know where everything goes in these things.

Any one else open the potted section on one of these with a failure? I'd be curious if it was the same problem. Wouldn't mind carving up a couple more to see if the failure is consistent.

Hi,

Just a quick question:
I've see that on the Backplane Mother Board there are two HVPS-related jumpers. One should read "34KV-INH" and the other "40KV-INH". Without knowing exactly what those do, wouldn't it still make sense verifiying how these are set in the problematic PJ and to compare that to a known good machine?

Regards,

Well Guy's,
Not much to report, looking at testing with a Revision A HVPS.
Also have a replacement green tube to install, this was going to be changed anyway, so why not swap it out, might be the problem tube??

Made a great mess doing this,

Cheers

About 4 days on and off,
estimate 2 straight hrs if done in 1 sitting. But hands do get sore after a little while.

Will do another one, as I damaged the transformer inside the potting.
Everything else is good, now to map it out.

Cheers

Oh Yeah, found no damaged or failed parts inside the potted section.
Just the damage I did getting it all out.

Cheers

I already have the map Steve, so dont waste your time.

Have you identified all the bad components yet?

And I need a resistor value on that large resistor in front of the transformer in the potted section.

No, It's a round one running from the lower board to the upper board in the potted section. It is right in front of the main transformer also in the potted section.

If it's marked on either board it is R95.

Hmmmm, not sure which one you are refering to,

as this is what I found,
8x diodes,
3x 470 ohm resistors,
2x 2.7k ohm
1x 144pF capacitor,
2x 250K ohm resistors,
1x 0.022uF 6000v capacitor,
11 x 0.022uF 10,000v capacitors,
also the transformer,

that is it.

Cheers

There's your problem! Your truck in the potting material, it's trailing flames. Very Happy

Have you ever thought that the flames on the trucks on your workbench surface are encouraging the HVPS to blow up? Smile

Nice disassembling of the potted section!!!!

Damm, didn't think about the truck, should have left my Ducati one on the workbench instead, ha ha.

Thanks Curt,
Have got lots of pics, can post if interested, took pics at each step of the disection.

Cheers

The biggest thing is to try and find something that dissolves or softens the potting compound. Spellman won't tell us anything, but I have upwards of 50 BArco quadruplers here that are defective that I've been saving to try and get something that will get that compound out of there...

I used a knife to cut it apart, but the material is brittle, so it sort of pops off in chunks.
I have a solution here which I am about to try on the 2nd HVPS, so I will report back on how it goes.

The first HVPS was a Revision B.

This next one is a Revision A.

Let the mess begin

Cheers

Well, the solution to breakdown the potted section, did not work,
just sat on the top, didn't soften at all. NEXT??

Cheers

The material in the potted section just swelled a little, not softened.

Then I found the burnt resistor, gone completely, and the burnt circuit board.
more to come.

Cheers
