My buddy is planning on picking up an HDFury for his projector.
Its a Toshiba TLP-671 1024x768 res.
If he tries to feed it 1080i from a bluray source what's the outcome gonna look like?
I wanted to lend him one of my spare 1270's but his wife says "HELL NO, its to BIG!!" Rolling Eyes

I'd say worse based on my experience with a 1024x768 DLP vs my 1252. No contest. The 1252 won.

or just overall it plain sucked?

Wellllll DLP plain sucks. You wont resolve 1080i on the DLP you are never getting more than 1024 pixels wide so no where near 1920.

Plus theres the lack of a black level on the DLP. So even if it will leterbox the picture you will still have grey bars top and bottom where as on CRT you can crush the raster and have inkey blackness.

See if you can get him and his wife to see 1080i on your 1270.

yea I did, thats why they're now looking to do 1080i on their LCD...
I didn't want to break his heart and tell him that it wasn't going to look great at all, unless I had some good facts to present to him. I already offered to lend him my spare, but his wife says no no no!! Laughing
I'm gonna see if he want's to unmount his and bring it over tonite, so he can see a side by side differences.

Basically you are sticking an HDFury on a projector that is a very, no make that SUPER sh*tty looking business projector--not an HT pj). I would STRONGLY advise against him wasting his money.

You would be better off to just buy a decend used 720p PJ that would not require an HDFury. There are many used 720p PJ that would throw a SUBSTANTIALLY better picture than that PJ for under $500.

Check AVS, Videogon, and eBay. For instance, there is an HD72 with less than 100 hours on it on ebay now. Starting bid $450, BIN $550. Look around, something like that should go for under $500. Trust me, the difference in picture between the Toshiba with an HDFury and the HD72 will almost be night and day. Is something like the HD72 the best PJ you can get? No, but a quite a damn bit better than the Toshiba.

$20 says if he popped the almost $500 for a decend used 720p PJ, he'd like it much better than a 1270!.

Well, that's a f*cking asinine, ignorant, and uninformed statement.

First of all... The projector in question isn't even a DLP - it's a 3LCD - so why did you bring DLP up, Jeremy? Second, you didn't specify "1024 DLP" when you bashed, you just said, "DLP plain sucks"... which is bull****. Some DLP looks excellent, and looks better in nearly every way than something like an old 12xx. A 1024 business DLP... No, but you didn't say that. So, I can see why Dave got his panties in a bunch.

Dave is right about the swap, too... My buddy had an older XGA LCD. It ran in 1024x576 on widescreen material. There's really very little difference at all between how SD and HD material is displayed, and of course the contrast and colors sucked. He got rid of it and bought a Panny PT-AX200U... I tried to get him to look at used DLP for even less money but he's more of a "new w/warranty" type of guy. It still looked FAR better than what he had.

Man, you guys need to chill... And Jeremy - you need to drop the whole "digital sucks" sentiment in every damn post where digital/analog comes up. Digital doesn't "just suck" - in some ways it's actually better. In some ways, analog is better, or perhaps more pleasing. If you're going to offer up your advice as an expert, then you should try to be at least be the slightest bit objective about the things you're espousing and recommending. Not everybody is an analog zealot, and not everybody wants a 150-200-pound hot, noisy behemoth hanging off their ceiling. Some people just want to watch movies.

I didn't specify 1024 because thats what the OP was asking about. Context.

No Dave just isn't a people person.

He may be right. BUT context again. It's his buddies 1024 DLP (ooops LCD ) vs a 1270 at 1080i. The 1270 will look better.

LOL Oh SC I am sorry for having offended thee.

No not everybody want's a CRT. However the 1270 will look better at 1080i vs the 1024 digital. That's my point. We weren't talking about replacing this 1024 projector with something else, we were comparing the two.
