I see on Newegg they have a deal on an Asus BC-08B1ST combo drive for $92 shipped. I was thinking of buying a new DVD drive to free up my IDE connection, but this would give me everything in one drive. Should I consider this, another combo drive or separate DVD and Blu ray drives?

Just curious 'cause I haven't done any reading or research on it... But, with several BD burners in the $140-200 ballpark, couldn't you just get a BD burner? That would truly be "everything in one drive".

I could, but I am not sure I really need or want it. Looking at the Egg, the LG is $139. That is $45 more expensive than the Asus. The only things I burn are usually Linux discs or maybe the occasional music disc. Ripping blu ray discs is overkill for me. Plus, the discs are ten times more expensive than a dvd. I know $45 doesn't seem like much, but if I am not going to use it then why spend the money. Of course, I would probably go ahead and do it if the disc prices were the same as dvd. Reading the Bjorn review, they say that there is no difference in manufacturing, so it is mostly margin. Honestly, I have moved over to flash for most of my portable storage needs.

OK, that makes sense... I was in "me" mode... I'm constantly thinking about repeatedly dumping off my 8GB CF cards off my DSLR to the hard drive, and wishing I had something besides a measly 8GB DVD-R DL. 25GB archive discs would be really nice. I don't even care that they're $5 a pop. But for most people, yeah - probably not much call. Might as well go with the cheap single drive.

You know, someone came out yesterday with a 256GB USB 3.0 thumb drive. Unfortunately, while it was faster than some SSDs, it was also more expensive.

Crabb,
I understand what you are saying about archiving in blu ray. My counterpoint would be that hard drives are cheaper on cost per gig than blu rays. I would rather have everything on one hard drive than forty blu rays. Also, you can plug a hd into just about any computer whereas you can not with a blu ray.

For the storage costs and personal time that would be required to make effort for authoring all those porn BD's, Spanky is right. Much cheaper to buy paired disks for porn redundancy.

Speaking for myself, I KNOW I would end up with gads of data strewn across even more gads of BD discs and not be able to find anything; or even remember I have it. It would be The Return to Floppy Days all over again. Laughing

I guess it would benefit somebody whose work is in say, multimedia productions to burn to BD...for the final version of their work.

With only a ~$45 diff I know which way I'd go. Mr. Green There's STILL a little thing called Bragging Rights. Thumbs Up

I haven't ordered yet.

Wan, my best friend said the same thing. It gives me pause, but from the casual reading I have done here and elsewhere there are better options. I thought you could do it in Ubuntu/Linux, but it may be a little harder than I originally thought. In Windows, I thought you just had to rip it to a MKV file and play it with WMC-HD. Am I missing something? I need to read more.

I stopped by TigerDirect/CompUSA today and picked up the Lite-On. It is an OEM drive, but it came with the PowerDVD disc. I decided to spend the extra $10($59) on the software for back up. Now to download Mike's program.Smile

- Windows 7
- EAC
- ?

edit - I see you have most of that on your thread

On 32 Bit Windows 7 for playback with FLAC (lossless) audio all I have installed is MPC-HC, ReClock and the lastest DirectX 9 rollups.

For Ripping to FLAC you need what's in thread. You won't need the Arcsoft trial if you keep the audio native lossless or AC3/DTS core. I rip on a different machine then my main HTPC. My main HTPC is a very lean install with a SDD as the only drive in the machine, I run all files off the server/ripper PC.

Yes... The trial will work for 30 days unless you have very new disks and the trial doesn't have the lastest hash for BD+. I've heard of people using DVD Fab Passkey...I've never used it myself. It's a good way to find out if ripping is your thing.
