|
|
Our current PS3 is starting to experience locking up problems so I told my son I would get him the new PS3 Slim for his birthday next week. When I started looking around today I am finding out that these things are in short supply. Does anyone have an idea of what store (internet or brick and mortar) may have these in stock?
Thanks
Dan

Dan,
The shortage is on Sony's end so supply is constrained right now... Has been for a few months. If this is for his birthday next week, then I'd kick the search into high gear. Forget online, as you'll never be able to time it right. If I were you, I'd call Target, Walmart, Toys-R-Us and maybe a GameStop or two and find out when they get their shipments, then go hit some of those stores that morning or two. Might take a little running for a day or two, but you should be able to find one that way.

Did you actually look at that page? No, they don't have it in stock... It says "Usually ships within 2 to 4 weeks.". Neither does Target.com. Everybody who has them in stock has them because they're tacking on a $50-60 premium.

Hmm, that's weird. It said 24 hours when I looked at it. Maybe its a conspiracy to make Dan out as a bad dad.
Sorry, I tried. I'd offer you my Slim but the wife would sooner f-me than let me give it up.

On my flight yesterday, I grabbed a copy of Home Theatre magazine. They are raving over the PS3 slim as second only to the Oppo. I imagine a lot of people are upgrading to the better machine.

Do you mean upgrading from fat to slim? There's a difference in PQ between the two? I have both but use my fat for the HT simply because it has all of my saved games on it Perhaps I should swap to the slim and put the fat upstairs?

I pre-ordered a PS3 Slim and received one of the first delivered. Mine malfunctions quite often. A couple of times it will not play a particular BD. Put the same disc in my 60GB PS3 and it plays without issue. The Slim is directly connected to the router while other devices connect wirelessly. Last night I wanted to play Pandora and it was playing multiple stations at the same time and kept dropping out. Again, no problem using other devices.
Anyone else have problems with the Slim? BTW: Firmware is up to date on both the 60GB & Slim machines.

I've not had any problems with the Slim. It survived a rather bad lightning strike where the 60GB unit did not. Surprisingly, the Slim has no grounded plug and the 60GB did. Go figure. Now cats and hogs are living together.

Betel,
Is your slim a year old? If there are BD's it won't play, then something is wrong with it and I'd be sending it in for warranty repair.
If you do send it in for warranty repair, make sure you tell the CSR that you want YOUR repaired PS3 back, or a like-new refurb... I had a buddy that sent in his original PS3 with a problem, and they sent him one back that looked like it had been in a house in Afghanistan... It was all beat up, scratches, dings, and dirty. They did make it right, and sent him a brand new one - But, I'd still make a point of my desire to mine or have a like-new one (like the one I was sending in).
One big difference between the fat and slim is that the slim has bitstreaming - the fat does not. That could be the reason the HT mag likes it so well. Not sure about PQ - I can't imagine there would be much difference in PQ between the two, if any.

Looks like the original ship date from Amazon was 8/26/09 so I haven't had it a year yet. I didn't realize it had a 1 year warranty so thanks for that info. I assumed it was the standard 90 days. The problems are so intermittent they will probably return it with no trouble found. I have two 60GB machines and never had an issue with either of those.

Recently I installed an Intermatic whole house surge suppressor on my electric panel. Fairly cheap protection considering the cost & hassle to replace electrical appliances. Not having a ground pin may be what saved the Slim. Grounds are installed to protect the user, not the equipment. Lightning strikes can raise the ground potential to be much greater than the power line legs.

The HT mag liked it because they fixed some of the issues of the fat. One is that they upgraded the processor, and because of that, it is more power efficient, and therefore generates less heat. Because of that, the fan is much more quiet than the fat. They only negative they had on it, was it still is the lone wolf on it's remote.

Why? Why would you run Linux on it, anyway? If you want a Linux box, aren't there comparably-priced, more flexible alternatives?

I totally agree and laugh at all of the people upset over this. The only people that should be upset are those that bought the PS3 for Linux. That should cover about ten people worldwide.
Oh and don't read the flash article?

Why be laughing at someone that bought something for a feature only to have the manufacturer remove aid feature later? How would you like to buy a new car with a supercharger installed only to have the feature removed after purchase? Car will still run in naturally aspirated condition, but its a screw-you situation.
I hear the Class Action case is coming up, though. At least if you bought a Slim you knew what you were getting, which wasn't the Linux feature.
