Wow, so Avatar - a total Xerox copy of at least two other scripts and an über-liberal anti-corporate, anti-business, anti-white man propaganda piece and you write about it like it's the best movie you've ever seen.
But, Ironman is crap - and is just chest-beating propaganda.
Hilarious!

I liked both...I'm not sure what it makes me....I guess I like to watch a movie to be entertained. I'll form my political views from somewhere else....Like MSNBC.

So I will reserve judgment on digital cinema. |
I won't. I've been to a couple films projected digitally, and I was totally unimpressed. Very sharp, but not as bright as what Mark saw, not as black as what Mark saw, and definitely not the super-high-quality image Mark saw. The one thing that really annoyed the sh*t out of me was the digital dithering... Especially in low-APL scenes in shadows and really obviously in the fade-to-black sequences... I don't know if it was the source, or the DLP chip/processing, but I kept seeing this sort of "shimmering curtain" effect, and it was pretty annoying.
That said, I've seen some total crap film presentations, too. Cineplexes just can't keep the quality of the presentation up with film projection when high-school kids are running the show. There's just no consistency, so you might get an excellent presentation on time, or you might get a really sh*tty one the next time.
Overall, I'd say the digital cinema projection, while certainly not superior in every way, is certainly superior in most ways - especially when you take into account that the film presentations are rarely (if ever) optimized. While film projection is certainly capable of producing a really high-quality image, the chances of seeing that really high-quality image in a modern cineplex is slim-to-none. With digital cinema, the quality is uniformly high. Whether you go on a weekday or a weekend, in the afternoon or late at night, or whether you go on release day or a month later, the presentation will be uniformly excellent.
Given all the realities, I'd say digital cinema is a welcome improvement to the theater-going experience. If you disagree with that, you're just ignoring the realities to suit your own preferences.
Sorry, Jeremy!

Me, too. I thought they were both decent movies, and I enjoyed them both. I'm like you - I really do enjoy a great many movies. I guess that makes us pretty indiscriminate, eh? I'm the same way with other things, too... I enjoy a cheeseburger just as much as a filet mignon, a good beer just as much as a fine whiskey.
Anyway, I was just calling Mark out on his obvious total lack of objectivity because they are both obviously well-made, decently written (if somewhat derivative) movies, political undertones notwithstanding.

I'm not able to play the Blu Ray copy of Avatar on my Samsung BD-C5500. I get a red screen that tells me to upgrade my firmware. However, I have the latest copy of the Samsung firmware. I have tried with another copy of the disc and it should fix the problem. This makes no sense to me.

If blu ray is a standardized format why cant they just add a firmware update to the blu ray disc ?
How many company's will continue to provide firmware updates to players out of production ?
Fox shot themselves in the foot with this one and it will only get worse !

Afraid that doesn't make sense Tom.
Yes, Blu-ray is a standardized format. That means that the way that data is stored on Blu-ray discs is a standard.
However, the software is used to run a Blu-ray player and how that Blu-play player works internally or what features are offered in the player is completely non-standard. That's what's in the firmware. Every Blu-ray player has a completely different firmware.

Guess firmware was a bad choice of words. Should have said MKB authentication codes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Key_Block
Avatar appears to have included an extra layer of copy protection not found in the firmware of many players or Fox just screwed up.....
Either way I just posted this on the wrong thread

On Amazon's site some have posted not to buy the initial release; that there will be one later this year with 20-40 more minutes of footage and extras; is this true?

James Cameron was quoted as saying there would be another release in the fall, but then Fox denied that. Of course, even if they were releasing one in the fall, Fox would probably deny it at this point.
So, it's all conjecture and impossible to predict when at this point, but there will definitely be a higher-end "special edition" type Avatar Blu-ray released, likely with a 3D version of the film, sometime between this fall and next year.

Avatar is my reference standard BD now. I enjoyed the movie and wished I had seen it at commercial theater. I had to overlook the political overtones though.
It was a bare bones release. Absolutely no extras.

I will look at it as a Conservative point of view. the Pandorians would be the Tea Party members and the Mining company and military are the Government and lawmakers . The Mining Company(Government) is trying to force these people to move and follow the will of the Government and the Pandorians say they need nothing but their Mother Pandora(the Constitution) as it provides all they need if they know how to tap into its potential of allowing them to exercise their free will and live as one with it(the Constitution) with limited Government intervention. |
Wow, I've never seen this phenomenon in real life! I read about the way many people process things through their filters and miss the obvious. The most interesting was a university study that they did where conservative students watched Colbert and didn't even realize he was making fun of them--they thought he was a conservative!

I thought it was a great movie, not worried about the political overtones.

I just watched this on my 42" RCA CRT RPTV via 1080i component.
Looked nice.
I think the movie should have been tittled "Fern Gully 2"
BTW weren't those the ships from Cameron's other movie Aliens?
Spoiler: Ripley dies in this one.

Lance Henriksen did NOT appear as an "artificial person"
Bill Paxton is still dead
Hicks is no where to be found
EDIT: For an extra trippy watch turn on the descriptive video and sub-tittles, I'm watching this a second time without actually watching it.

Guess it's kind of funny I have the blu ray disc but because of the added DRM BS I cant watch it on my licensed blu ray player without a firmware update on a discontinued player that will probably not happen. Without the firmware update I cannot play a disc I payed for....
Oh and f*ck fox ! Its the only blu ray disc that wont play.
Just waiting to see if they blunder down that trail again.......

It took me three times to get it to play on my Sony 550
Tom does your Bluray player have a memory stick?

Try pulling the USB stick and playing the movie. I had to do that with Batman and I never plugged it back in.
