Avatar [Blu-ray] (2009)

James Cameron's Oscar and Golden Globe winning highest grossing picture of all time is headed for high-definition in April!

As previously rumored the mega hit 'Avatar' starring Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver is coming to DVD and Blu-ray on Earth Day (April 22).

According to a statement by Avatar producer Jon Landau in the Los Angeles Times, this will be a bare-bones BD/DVD combo release as "we wanted to do something really special and reach for the best presentation of any film in the history of the format. Everything that is put on a disc takes up room – the menus, the extras, the trailers and studio promotions – and we got rid of all of that so we could give this movie the best picture and sound possible."

However, those who salivate over supplements can expect a multi-disc "Ultimate Edition" double dip in November, and more details on that will be revealed on March 23 at a press release with Landau and Cameron.

I watched it last night...I think I'm the only one in the world that had not seen it a commercial theater. I have to say I was impressed, even on my lowly 2D XG. Looks like I have a new demo disk, especially the flying shots. At first I thought the CGI was to much. By the end of the film I completely forget most of the imagery was computer generated.

The story does have certain political overtones...Not to turn this into a political thread...But I am curious what some non-tree huggers thought of the film.

The movie was plot thin and it pissed off a lot of my military friends. other than that I thought it looked great and was entertaining. I bought the BD and look forward to watching it in the basement.

We just finished Avatar on Blu-ray. Very good movie ( an adult "ferngully"). Not sure we could have handled it in 3D. I can see why people got sick. I think it would have been too distracting. The images were so lifelike it was close enough to "being there" for us. Actually, it seemed like a lot of it was taken from "Battle for Terra" which we also liked, even with the tree hugger overtones.

Mike, we didn't see it in the commercial theatre either.

For us the only one nagging thing was calling the ore "unobtanium", seriously, come up with something else.

Mike I also did not see it in the theater. But I hear they are going to release it in 3D Again with 6 more minutes added in the theaters . Not sure if it will be IMAX or not but i'll go see it for sure after watching it on the blend. Simply an amazing visual delight. it left me wanting more. As for plot it closely mirrored the animation Battle for Terra. that was also pretty good and a fellow member here posted about it. I am not sure if I really want to say it had political overtones but more Moral overtones. Do you do the Right thing or not.

Now if you want to say it has political overtones anything can be spun for what you want it to be.

I will look at it as a Conservative point of view. the Pandorians would be the Tea Party members and the Mining company and military are the Government and lawmakers . The Mining Company(Government) is trying to force these people to move and follow the will of the Government and the Pandorians say they need nothing but their Mother Pandora(the Constitution) as it provides all they need if they know how to tap into its potential of allowing them to exercise their free will and live as one with it(the Constitution) with limited Government intervention.

you can see where the rest would be going in this current political environment.

So there is my Conservative take on the Political overtone I saw Wink

I'm not a big sci fi fan, but saw a preview last fall at whatever I went to see in the theater. I remember it looked spectacular, but still didn't go see it in the theater. The more it was hyped, the less interested I got.

Friday I went to tweak a Zenith PRO 900 and install a BR player while the customer was at work. On top of the DVD player was Avatar. So I sat down after tweaking the set, and got sucked right into the movie and the visuals in the first 10 minutes. Realizing that I would end up sitting there for the whole movie, so I reluctantly turned it off.. Was a WalMart last night, and the damn thing was sold out. Sad

3D doesn't work for me I'm afraid. I've had a lazy left eye since birth, and it's only used about 20% of the time. No 3D system, regardless of which one it is has ever worked for me.

No loss IMHO. 3D works fine for me, and I saw Avatar in 3D Imax. And for the most part I thought it was a distraction and hurt the PQ, and the damn glasses were uncomfortable. There were one or two "oooh wow, look at that!" moments where the 3D was really extremely effective (like bits of ash floating in the air) but that was a distraction from the story for the geekiness of the technology.

Current technology (e.g. as used in Avatar) shouldn't be sensitive to head tilt. They use circular polarization, which isn't affected by angle. I'm not sure about Polar Express.

I thought the movie was crap, but it was easily worth my money watching it in the theater. Felt like i was looking through a window. Next big 3d release though, i'm wearing freaking contacts, 2 pairs of glasses just don't work.
