After many years of NEC XG ownership, I'm the proud new owner of a Sony G90. I just ordered a p19LUG Green CRT from Greg Eismann and expect to do some calibration when I install it. So far I haven't seen a G2 adjustment in the menus. I know there are BIAS and GAIN.

Is there a G2 adjustment and a guide for setup?

If it's like the G70, you can access it by pressing the bias button twice. (once to open the bias menu, and again to toggle to G2) Press again to toggle back to bias.

Thanks Winduptoy, I'll give that a try when the new tube arrives. Are there setup instructions? I downloaded the service manual but didn't find any. I did see a G1 section.

G2 is not an available option on G70's with newer firmware.

The G2 on the G90 is Automatic. You have to turn on ABG mode for it to kick in and adjust auto.

No manual G2 on the G90.

G2 sets up the point (of brightness) where the CRT just begins to light up. On the 12XX series pj's there was a test point to monitor as you adjusted the screen pot. The alternative method is to view the CRT face showing a gray scale and increasing G2 until the proper gray level just begins to light.

After turning on ABG, initially you will see a white line just above the image. It will disappear after about 20 minutes.

After running ABG for the required twenty minutes to establish the G2 setting I recommend turning off ABG and leaving it off. Any time you redo gray scale, just toggle ABG back on for twenty minutes before recalibration.

The only other way to change G2 on the G90 is to remove the Dallas chip, copy the data to a pc, edit the G2 addresses manually with a hex editor, and then rewrite and reinstall the Dallas chip. This is a dangerous procedure if you are not careful and the YA board (where the Dallas ship is installed) is delicate and rather irreplaceable.
