Question; does the vpr-722 remote control box work with a sony vph-d50? i have been using it for years with my 1020, but dont really want to try the does it blow up test, the plugs all look the same...

I would seriously doubt it, the 1020 is a completely analog device, whereas the controls on the D50 are all digital. The plug you refer to is the same because they use the same cable between the switchers and projectors, if I remember correctly, it carries RGBHV and a control signal for switching when used with the switcher...
