Dear all
I'm combining a 9500LC and a 8500LC Ultra. I can see I have both a VIM 50-2035-02P and a 50-2035-03P.
Simple question. Which one should I use? My own guess is the 03P.
Kind regards, Claus

Hello
The -03 is regarded as higher performance, Mike Parker could explain exactly why. Mike?

The 03 VIM (50-2035-03P) is the latest o the VIM's, but was discontinued. It was more commonly found in the 8110's with a few scattered out into 8500's and 9500's.
By the time that VDC purchased the Marquee series, the 03 VIM was already gone.
If you have an 03 VIM, it would not have the same issues that the 02 VIM had that required TECH Bulletin upgrades. Those issues were solved in the 03 VIM design. So there's no need for any tech bulletin fixes.
It is the HIGHEST bandwidth video board found in any of the popular CRT projectors. So it's much sharper, and with that sharpness. it's also a tad noisier. But by far better than an 02 VIM.
The design uses an AD834 contrast or gain chip. Which replaced the AD835 contrast chip found in the 02 VIM. The AD835 was also being used in the Barco 909, Cine 9 and the Sony G90. It has a bandwidth of 250mhz. The AD834 used in the 03 VIM, has a bandwidth of 500mhz.
I don't know what caused them to design the 03 VIM, but was only told that they knew when Christie purchased Electrohome, the goal was to be a main player in Digital Projectors for HIGH END Cinema and commercial applications. So it was believed to have been discontinued right around the same time Christie made the purchase. And at that point, CRT was coming off the design table.
So at some point the engineers set down to design an improved and higher bandwidth VIM, but it looks like the sale of the company and the future of CRT caused the 03 VIM to become discontinued.
And that also explains why all the 02 VIMs is using the exact same board design they came out with in the 8500/9500 design upgrades (1995).
It's a really great VIM, better than anything found in any of the other top end CRT projectors that ever hit the Market... and that includes the Barco 909, which uses the AD835 (250mhz).

Great information there Mike.
I can say that when I had the borrowed 03 VIM in GOZER it was displaying a great picture, but brought forward some back ground noise in the form of A "static fuzzyness" in the overall picture.
The 03 VIM has a picture on par with the MP boards I now have. However the 03 VIM is NOT better in picture quality the the MIkron boards which just would not work in GOZER. [Lets just not go back there though]

Hi Dave!
you started out with modified boards and from there went to a Special Mikron. So anything stock you looked at from that point would be noisier.
The last time you were here we compared a Stock 03 VIM to that same Specially modified 02 VIM on my 9500...
At present, the 03 VIM is no longer the best VIM out there and you saw that for yourself..
In the near future I'm having a few folk over. Would like to also have you stop by and see what's been going on since your last visit.

Sure thing Mike, just let me know when. I have been watching you chase the noise issues in the Marquee with great interest.

Dear Tim and Mike
Thanks a lot for your answers.
I will put in the 03P and see the modifications Mike comes up with. Now I have both and can mod one if needed.
Kind regards, Claus

It's amazing to me that VDC isn't making the 03P version if it's so much better.
I have an MP-modded 02P and also a stock 03P. I wonder how they compare directly.
I also wonder how much better an MP-modded 03P would be.

The MP 02 VIM has less background noise then an 03 VIM but not by that much. The picture is pretty close but the MP 02 VIM wins by a small amount IMHO. I have never seen an MP 03 VIM in action, I Know Wksoman has them in his blend and loves them. Plus the RCA jacks on the 03 VIM are not in a straight line like the 02 Vim suggesting to me someone moved them for an improvement.
Of course I really don't know but it sounds plausible.

By the time VDC had purchased the Marquee from Christie, the 03 VIM was no more. they had discontinued it years earlier.
The only thing I found out from talking to one of their engineers, was they had become very cost conscience when it came to the Marquee in its later years.
An earlier version (the one you have) MP modified 02 most likely would not be compare to a Stock 03, it would only had less noise.
A Mikron would be different and may compare, but the version we're working on now would blow away a stock 03. At least that was the opinion of some who has seen them compared.
The newer modified VIM I call a Super 02. It's cleaner, sharper, better colors, punchier and has very good low noise performance, considering the bandwidth it handles.
I have three of them here, one modified (but not the latest version) and two stock. I've done that demo several time so far, and will be doing so again some time soon.
I've yet to covert (or modify) one of the 03's that i have to the latest version.
I've been using an 02 in my Marquee for well over a year. My goal was to try and get the absolute best out of the 02 since it was the most common of the two VIMs.

I'll add this, until you have seen Mike's 9500 in person, you can't imagine the true difference it has over a stock or in my case an already modded machine.
It's makes you want to slap your own machine for falling short of whats possible.
Of course tubes with only 600 hours on them don't hurt either.

Here's a few quick shots I just took from my setup with the Super 02 VIM. This same Marquee has some other things also done to it in the past week, so it's not exactly what you'll get from this one board (VIM only) mod upgrade.

Trying to understand some of this stuff guys... If a projector has a Moome (or other) input card installed is the VIM (video input module, correct?)you guys are discussing still in play?

Others can explain it better and in more depth but,YES. A Moome card connects to the slot 2 or [auxiliary slot] on the marquees VIM and The Marquees VIM still processes the Signal to the Neckboards to the tubes... and so on.

Dear Mike
I'm in Denmark, so quite a trip away I have to update my profile to show that!
I have been following your news regarding the mod to the VIM 02P. What I cannot figure out is if this will be a DIY or a paid mod like in the past. I'm an electronic engineer myself and can do anything from here.
Kind regards, Claus

No, it's not going to be DIY. But the purchase will be different from how it was in the past.
These mods are under testing for now, but should be released sometime this month (February).
The new way of purchasing this version would involve what's already in stock or on the shelf. We'll no longer ask for boards to be sent in for modification. It will be exchange only.
And also with this version, you'll only have to swap out the VIM. And that's why it's being called a 5 minute mod upgrade..
For anyone interested in purchasing this version, they would have to follow a projector Image evaluation procedure, that would determine if the neck boards and a few other things in general would make the projector compatible to the modified VIM.
The VIM within itself solves a lot of noise problems that's common to most Marquees, it does that by the use of over 32 inductors installed on the VIM.
Yep, you're too far away..

Dear Mike
Do you have any idea on the price? Will you make the mod both for 02P and 03P?

Give me a couple of weeks on the price. There's a few things I'll have to check out first.
I've yet to modify an 03 with these changes, but will be doing so very very soon. But the only concern with the 03 is making sure I can keep them on the shelf for exchange.
A Super 03 VIM... now that would really put things over the top..

Well, I think I have a pair of "almost" super 50-2035-03P VIMs in the blend. Image looks pretty damn clear from where I sit (about 17 feet back from the 12' wide screen). The best of all possible worlds: a 50-2035-03P VIM mod'd to super status.
Mike modd'd my 03 VIMs in early January, to his latest status at that time. Made a noticable difference in the image, more on the left projector than on the right projector, probably because the left projector had more issues. Removed several veils, bringing the image much closer to "looking out a window" status, aka The Holy Grail.
To summarize, in order from worst to best, the Maquee VIMs rank:
50-2035-02 stock
50-2035-03 stock
50-2035-02 MP Mod'd Super
50-2035-03 MP Mod'd Super
I've owned all 4 versions. I curently have 2 of the 50-2035-03 MP Mod'd Super VIMs and one 50-2035-02 MP Mod'd Super VIM (the backup VIM). Putting different versions in a blend sure makes it easy to see the differences.
So, my advice to the OP is to install the 50-2035-02 stock VIM in the Marquee, and ship the 50-2035-03 stock VIM to MP for the Super mod, if MP will do it. You won't believe the difference when you get the 50-2035-03 Super mod back.
William
