Hi gang,
I don't post very often as most of the time I manage to find the answers I need from older threads, but the past year the convergence on my ceiling mounted 8500 has been acting up somewhat intermittently.
Here's what happens:
- Once in a while, the convergence will shift in the horizontal axis. From what I recall, the red and blue will widen as compared to green and will also shift off center from green. Red and blue will shift to different sides from green. Correction only requires a horizontal shift to both colors, vertical adjustment seldom needs adjustment.
- When this happens, I will need to do several corrections in a short time frame (over a couple of weeks or so, sometimes the next day). Then, the convergence is suddenly stable for several weeks until the same thing happens again.
- I have tried removing the covers and pushing in the boards, but they were well seated.
Any thoughts on this? Is this the type of thing DraganM's capacitor upgrade will fix or am I dealing with another issue?
I have a spare working 8500 that I can use for swaps but from what I recall that unit's convergence slowly shifts over time (but no sudden shifts). Unit on ceiling has about 4000 hrs, spare unit has about 46000 hrs.
Thanks for any help!

A single repair can gobble up almost as much time as all my up-grade work combined so luckily for repairs we have Curt.

Thanks for any help! | based on your description, I would swap out the Horizontal Deflection module (HDM). Static raster positioning is delivered through the the sweep coil so if the entire raster is shifting I would suspect HDM. The capacitors they used to drive the sweep on the HDM are really cheesy, and also part of my package BTW.
suspect number 2 might be CLM but doubtful.

Thanks, I'll try that board swap then. If that fixes it, I'll know which boards are good for refurbishing!

I would make sure all your hardware is tight. A few years ago I sold a minty low hour 9500 Ultra locally. Customer set it up, I tweaked it, and then 3 weeks later he complained about the red convergence shifting by one line. Turns out the LC tube bolts that hold the tubes to the chassis weren't quite tight enough, and the heat shifted things.
Then, on my own 9500 non Ultra, I had green convergence shift. Turns out the focus yoke brass screws were loose. SOMEONE forgot to tighten them apparently....

Hmmm, the first time it happened to me my impression was that I may have bumped it somehow but figured at 150 lbs there was little chance of the projector moving. I'll go in with the wrench before swapping boards then!
Once I've sorted this out, I can install those HD145s I got from you last year
