If anyone's interested in buying a Radiance (any version, including the newer less expensive XS) we have them here. We even throw in a free $1139 EyeOnePro meter with CalMAN Enthusiast package!
Sencore who now is the official distributor is strict about pricing (you can't discount at all). But there's no rules against adding free stuff! Already got an EyeOne Pro or want something else? Email me at kal@curtpalme.com

And if you want to get really persnickety, it's actually 71.92807192807190 Hz

Yes, but nothing wrong with repeating yourself.
I wish I had 71.928 back as well (used it back in the HTPC days) but can't swallow the $5K cost to get a Radiance to do just that (ok, I know it does more but I actually wouldn't be using most of the other features other than a little bit of greyscale curve fixing in the low end).

Don't forget 817x1920 72Hz, a CMS which is really nice for fixing the red primary on 9" machines, built in pattern generator, support for sending HDMI video to the projector and HDMI audio to a receiver separately, gamma correction, a zoom feature for all aspect ratios and scan rates to push tickers and station logos off the screen, the best scaling for SD to high resolutions, consistent output scan rates which allows for setting up only a few memories in a CRT projector, underscanning for TV stations that have garbage at the sides of the picture..............................
And besides, the XS is only $3495 now, so you don't have to cough up $5k at least.

Craig to you know what the Digital side of the HDQ or HDP pro chip max is, not what lumagen limits it to?
Athanasios |
I forgot to mention Tom, that Patrick of Lumagen tried 165 Mhz on an Radiance XD, and the XD was already having noise problems (red specks). 1080p 72Hz needs almost 180 MHz, so the XD that was tested was not even close. The XD is HDMI 1.1 and the XE is 1.3. The HDMI 1.3 chips support 180 MHz, but 1.1 only supports 160 MHz.
The VisionHDP units are pre-HDMI. Actually, their DVI outputs were designed very early into DVI. I really doubt that the VisionHDP's are even remotely close to having the needed hardware. You'll just have to get an XS or XE down the road

Craig, Just interested to note your opinion,
When using the CMS and so on in the Radiance do you notice any Dithering ?
Couple of Advanced users have mentioned over on AVS that have experience with the Radiance & or SpectraCal's new Video EQ Pro Box that they notice/are sensitive to the Dithering artifact...
Sorry for off topic post,
Cheers...

No dithering at all on the Radiance.
Based on what I know about SpectraCal's new box, their CMS is not as refined as the CMS in the Radiance processors. I think the SpectraCal CMS is working in the HLS space rather than the RGB space and this can cause some issues.
On a digital projector I usually use the Radiance CMS to fully correct the colors (or almost fully correct). When I use the CMS on a CRT, I only use it for red, and I only partially correct the red primary.
The red primary on 9" CRT's (with or without a red c-element) has not enough blue (to much red). You can use the CMS in the radiance to add some emissions from the blue while red is being shown. This makes red whiter and moves the red primary closer to blue as it needs to go.
However, I don't fully correct the red primary on a CRT because I think it looks weird. I don't know if this weirdness is because I have been looking at 9" CRT's with over saturated red primaries for so long that I now like it, or if something is actually wrong with using full correction. But to fully correct red on a CRT one needs to add about 120/1024 parts of blue to red. I find that I like to add about 45/1024 parts blue to red for the best picture. So I only correct the red primary about 1/3 of the way. In any event, it makes a huge difference especially in flesh tones.
I really feel that a 9" CRT projector with full color corrected c-elements and a Radiance CMS looks better color wise than anything else I have seen. I also did a little report about red verses clear c-elements the other day and you can read it here http://www.cir-engineering.com/red_celement_compare.php.

Oh yeah I forgot about one killer app, PIP (picture-in-picture) for HDMI sources Is there even another device in the world (at this price point) that can do HDMI-PIP?

Jim Peterson of Lumagen just posted the below to a thread on AVS:
| Quote: | We have decided to do a special 1080p72 and 1080p75 version of the RadianceXS and RadianceXE. We are going to charge a $500 US MSRP adder for this. If you have a Radiance already you can send it in for the mod and we will do it for $500 plus shipping. This includes testing your unit at speed and replacing the board if your particular unit is not fast enough for these higher rates.
New units will have our standard 1 year limited warranty. Mods will have a 90 day warranty.
We will handle upgrades in the US and Canada. I am contacting Gordon Fraser in the UK to see if he will handle the mods in Europe.
Please call us if you are interested (503-574-2211) |
So good news for all of you who want 1080p 72Hz out of the Radiance processors! You guys can thank me for pushing Lumagen along on this one

Craig,
I'm looking for jim's post on AVS but can't seem to find anything - can you point me in the right direction?
Also, how will this work with future firmware updates? I was under the impression that everything was being done in software anyways to enable 1080p72 - are there now going to be separate sets of firmware for the SE boxes and the non-SE boxes? And what's to prevent someone from downloading the SE firmware and installing it on a non-SE box to see if their hardware is capable of supporting the higher framerates?

Tom linked to the correct thread on AVS, but I am thinking of starting a new one here and over there just for the Special Edition units.
There is a small difference between the SE firmware and regular firmware files for the XS and XE units. However, the same FW file will be used for SE and non-SE Radiance processors. The FW will know if your unit is SE and will allow SE features only if it detects the SE upgrades. So there will be one firmware for the XS and XSSE units, and a different firmware for the XE and XESE units, just as it is now.
And everything is NOT being done in software alone, there are hardware changes that need to be made to the boards of your processor in order to make it run stably at 180 MHz. Anyone can't simply install the SE firmware because the FW will not simply unlock the higher clocks. The FW must detect that your processor is capable of running 72Hz and it will not allow the higher clocks if your units is not SE from Lumagen.

Awesome, thanks for the answer. One more question - will there be anything that will physically discern (sinage/symbol on case or something to that effect) between the SE and non-SE units? Or will this be a functional upgrade only?

I have not heard any mention from Jim about any distinction or change to the case. I think the changes will be function only. Some changes to the boards, addition of a heat sink and maybe a fan, and the new software.

Jim just sent me an email saying that Lumagen has decided NOT to call the 72Hz Radiance processors "Special Edition" after all. Instead, they will be called the XE+ and XS+. Minor details

Hi Kal
Is black the standard color of the Lumagen Radiance XE? It seems to be in the advert. Do I need to specify the colour when I'm ordering, or will I be getting the default black Radiance XE? I would prefer the black as it would match the other equipment I have.

No need to specific colour. I believe black is the only colour available for both the XE and XS. The first XD's (now discontinued) did originally have silver and then they went black eventually.
If you want to be 100% sure, after you place your order forward your order receipt email to us at kal@curtpalme.com and specify that you want a black face.
Thanks for the interest/support!

While I was beta testing the XE they were always sent to me in black. However, the officially release version XE was originally silver. At this point I think that the XE is black again, but I would certainly do as Kal suggests and check to verify that it will come in the color you want.
